PETITION TO SUPPORT MONTGOMERY COUNTY ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL

We the citizens signing this petition request that the officials we elected to represent us in county government, namely the County Commission, will take steps to support our local animal control. Our shelter has been neglected and underfunded for many years. This neglect is evident in the statistics provided on a monthly basis. Overpopulation is rampant and has become a major burden for our shelter. To the point where it is very difficult to enforce the 3 day stray hold mandated by state law because there is no room ! Healthy animals have to be euthanized in large quantities which will be replenished immediately with new intakes. This is not about pet owners and non pet owners. This is about our community. This is about adequate funding and government support
We request that a committee will be set up with representation from the county commission as well as members from animal advocacy groups and the veterinary community to discuss a strategy as to how to proceed forward to make our shelter become what it should be. We do not need to invent the wheel. There are plenty of successful shelters and programs we can learn from.
We request that there will be an independent study done to identify needs and wants and for the committee to brief the county commission members within 90 days of their findings and recommendations..
We have to make an effort to become a pet friendly community, which in return will not only bring in new business and revenue but will create a much healthier environment.
