The County of Amherst purchased the former Amherst Baptist Church, circa 1882, believed to be the second oldest house of worship in the Town of Amherst, in 2006.

The building has remained unused and continues to deteriorate. A group of interested county citizens wish to renovate the facility for use as a cultural community center. However, the current board of supervisors, in a continued 3-2 split, have voted to demolish the building. This petition seeks to reverse that decision.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS:

The Amherst Baptist Church, built circa 1882 and the circa 1925 addition to the Church, should be preserved in perpetuity by Amherst County, its present owner, and all future owners.

While Amherst County is the owner, the property will be made available for the benefit and the reasonable and legal use by County residents.

The County shall take all necessary steps to ensure that these restrictions are added to the deed to the Church property.
