The George Washington University currently does not provide an option for students to minor in Persian language and literature despite offering three full years of language study and multiple courses related to Persian culture, history and politics. GWU offers language minors for almost all languages taught at GW including Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, Chinese, German, French, Korean, Japanese and Italian, which require on average around 21 credits. Students completing the Persian program at GWU earn 22 credits of language study and many earn additional credit through related courses such as Iranian Cinema and Modern Iran. The George Washington University should create a Persian Minor to give recognition to students pursuing Persian Studies at GW.

We, the undersigned, call on The George Washington University to approve the creation of a Persian Minor within the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and create all of the necessary additional courses required for completion of the minor. Students in the Persian program at GW already have completed most of the requirements for a minor consistent with other languages offered through Columbian College, and should be able to receive recognition for their studies.
