Background

The Parkallen Community League has been actively involved with the City of Edmonton, as a member of the Rollie Miles Advisory Committee, and through other engagement activities since 2013, in developing a plan for the Rollie Miles Athletic Field District Park Renewal. The Rollie Miles Athletic Field District Park Master Plan was presented to Council during budget discussions in November 2018. Design costs for Rollie Miles Park are estimated to be $2.3M; the total cost to build the facility is estimated at $76M.

Parkallen is pleased the Council supported the recommendation to provide $1.2M in the operating budget to keep Scona Pool open for four more years. However, we know this facility and other local amenities including the George S.Hughes and Tipton Arenas have been identified for eventual closure. This would create a significant gap in accessible recreational amenities for current and future residents in the surrounding communities. The City projects density will almost triple from 34 residential units/ha to 93 residential units/ha in this area of the City. (need a link to the support for this statement)
Why Scona Pool is important to Parkallen

The Parkallen Community League offers free punch passes for Scona Pool along with our Community League memberships. Many Parkallen High School students use the facility; parents are more comfortable sending their children to Scona Pool which is only 1.8 km away (a 22-minute walk or 6-minute cycle) but would hesitate to send their children to any of the three options Administration suggested as alternatives. Local seniors use Scona Pool for exercise and many can walk there.

Whereas: a renewed Rollie Miles Athletic District would support the sustainable development goals of our City, maintain livability in our core and mature neighbourhoods and provide a facility that can be accessed by walkable, bikeable, transit-oriented options that support key progressive City of Edmonton initiatives,

We the undersigned support the Parkallen Community League's request that City Council approve $2.3M to fund the design of the Rollie Miles Recreation Centre when Council reviews its Capital Budget on June 4, 2019.
