When the VA Medical Center constructed the gate on Couldon Blvd, the traffic in the town of Perryville and on the VA Medical grounds was easier to navigate. October of 2016 that gate was no longer accessible to all travelers and was utilized as a Truck Entrance only. The Town of Perryville became a congestion around 4:30 and 5:30 every day. We also have school entrances on Aiken Ave being blocked during 3:00 and 3:30 every day. The town for whatever reason fought the gate to be utilized.
Move forward to the summer of 2017 when the construction started on the Water Treatment Plant on Perry Point and the new Housing construction for veterans and the VA has become a maze to navigate. Traffic is being diverted on a daily basis and that is causing vehicles to navigate on roads that have potholes and loose rubble everywhere. Most people pay a lot of money to have and maintain their vehicles and this is not feasible to ask them to navigate on construction roads. Not to mention delaying their commute times to and from work and during lunch hours.
Businesses on Front Street should not be able to dictate what entrance is used for lack of business. If patrons want to visit the businesses that is a choice they make, not by driving by, but in wanting to partake in what they have to sell. They should not be the only voice that is heard when deciding the traffic in our town. Our children's safety is also a factor and having this traffic diverted to save a business, is not only irresponsible but it is also greed driven. For the sake of our children and our town, we need this policy to change.

We, the undersigned, call on the Town of Perryville and the VA Medical Center to reopen the entrance on Couldon Blvd to be opened for all traffic effective immediately. This opening will not only cut down on traffic in the town of Perryville but also decrease the volume on the VA grounds during construction. Thank you, the employees of Dept of Health and Human Services and the Department of Veteran's Affairs.
