In the last week there has been 2 fatal accidents that has taken 3 lives of teenagers from Staunton River High School. In the last study conducted 2006, just in 2004-2006 there were 179 accidents, Many more since then. RT.24. Deer, speeding, lighting, and road conditions has been the issues.
A little information on Rt. 24, its a two lane road that has no street lights, no guard rails, no where to pull over if the vehicle breaks down, or for police officers to monitor, enforce or pull over violators. The speed limit is 55 mph on a road with heavy sharp curves and very small lanes, except for a small portion of Chamblisburg where the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph.
At night it is so dangerous police, fire and rescue avoid this road as much as possible. Neighbors risk there lives just pulling out there driveways. VDOT claims this road is safe and on their proposal for 2030 (18 years from now) 25,000 cars will be driving on this road. What they don't know is we are already at that point with an increase of 60% since West Lake has been built.
Something needs to be done!!
We want these things to happen:
1 WIDEN THE LANES WITHIN 5 YEARS
2 LOWER THE SPEED LIMIT TO 45 MPH ALL OVER RT 24
3 ADD STREET LIGHTS ON CURVES
4 GUARD RAILS IN AREAS NEEDED
5 MORE DEER CAUTION SIGNS
6 CHANGE HUNTING SEASON FROM 2 WEEKS TO 4 WEEKS TO CONTROL DEER POPULATION.
7 PROVIDE SCHOOLS WITH SIMULATORS WITH DRIVERS EDUCATION CLASSES.
