The loss of EU protections could mean the air we breath becomes even more polluted. Already each year, as many as 130 deaths can be attributed to air pollution in Maidstone. Exposure to poor air will rise with Maidstone Borough Council's 'improvements' to the ring road system in the town centre which will increase the volume of traffic through the town while only reducing travel times by an estimated 74 seconds.
This petition calls on Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough Council to reduce the death toll in Maidstone by taking decisive measures to improve our air quality through:
- a reduction in the amount of petrol and diesel powered vehicle journeys made in Maidstone
- prioritising travel by foot and bicycle over cars
- significantly improving public transport.
With a current death toll of around130 deaths every year in the Borough of Maidstone which are attributable to exposure to air pollution primarily from vehicles, we, the undersigned, call on Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough Council to take decisive measures to improve our air quality by reducing the amount of petrol and diesel powered vehicle journeys made in Maidstone by prioritising travel by foot and bicycle over cars and by significantly improving public transport.
