For many years, students who scored greater than the 95% percentile on their MAP testing in the second grade were provided direct services starting in the 3rd grade.

We have heard that there are significant changes that are being proposed to this program; incoming third graders will NOT receive the same services that third graders in prior years have received. And we have heard that more changes are planned for the following year.
We are concerned that we have not heard this formally from the District, but we have heard it informally from teachers and administrators. We understand that the district plans on sending out information regarding these changes on the last day of the school year with report cards.
We, the undersigned, call on the Oak Park D97 Board of Education and Administration to delay implementing changes in the Gifted and Talented program to provide an opportunity for community and parent feedback on the proposed changes and for more preparation time for teachers and administrators.
We believe in equity and excellence. We believe our D97 schools should continue to raise the bar for all students, and not put an artificial ceiling on what any student in the district can achieve.
The following factors influence our request:
---- Parents have not been sufficiently consulted about these changes and these changes have not been communicated to impacted families.
---- We are concerned that these changes are not fair to our D97 teachers. We believe teachers deserve adequate time for faculty development to implement another significant change in the curriculum.
