- Ministry of Fisheries, Permanent Secretary
This petition is now closed
Since the ban of spearfishing on our island has been in effect, the right for recreational spearfishing as a sport has also been affected, Despite having a ban on spearfishing on the island for over a decade, it doesn't seem to have taken any effect on many of the locals and fishermen amongst who still practice this type of fishing completely ignoring the ban.
My aim for this petition is to ask for our right as locals and tourists to have the legal entitlement to carry out spearfishing as a sport and a sustainable way of acquiring food.
This link will help you understand where we want make an amendment in the FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES ACT (Act 27 of 2007 – 8 May 2008) section 12 (1) (h).
Since we all know that speargun has and may be use as a deadly weapon, We are kindly making request to the Ministry of Fisheries and Permanent Secretary to make an amendment in the FISHERIES AND MARINE RESOURCES ACT
(Act 27 of 2007 – 8 May 2008) section 12 (1) (h), "No person shall fish with, or have in his possession, a speargun, except with the written approval of the Permanent Secretary"
We are hereby making a request for an approval to introduce a legislation as per section 12 (1) (h) where recreational spearfishing would only be permitted with the use of a sling or pole spear via the acquisition of a permit, a close and open season and a limit set to how many kilograms of fish one can land without the use of any scuba gear just as The Bahamas and other areas alike.
