Justice for Alphie R. Herrera

Alphie R. Herrera, age 39, passed away the late morning of February 28, 2013, due to a brutal beating he had received while in custody under the Lehigh County Correctional Facility in Allentown, Pa. Alphie Herrera was an epileptic, which resulted to the beating that led to his unlawful death.

Alphie had been taking medications for his disorder, and this is recorded under the District Attorney’s report. But naturally he was to undergo a seizure due to his illness. On February 27th, 2013, 6:13pm, he suffered from an epileptic episode in his cell. Officials were sent to restrain him due to his involuntary movements. A nurse was sent to calm him but he then suffered from another seizure.

According to the report, They applied smelling salts, placed him in cuffs, applied pepper spray, placed him in leg shackles, then to a restrain chair, and finally placed a spit hood on Alphie. The Medical Unit evaluated him, and rushed him to the hospital for his condition was deteriorating.

However the report fails to add that Alphie Herrera received a beating rather than proper medical assistance, where it is reported under the report that he was being “combative.” When the family of Alphie arrived at the hospital out of concern of what happened to him, they come to find a mutated man due to a deadly beating which the correction officers were responsible of. An individual with epilepsy can never handle such physical trauma to the extent of full recovery. He passed away in the hospital at 11am the following day.

A person who is having a seizure is not conscious of their actions; he was fighting for his life and lost the fight. His final goodbye was a presentation of his body in a closed casket, ordered by The Lehigh County Coroner. A closed casket is not necessary for someone who died from a seizure. Seizures do not give broken bones, bruises or wounds that result in death, especially when a patient is receiving the necessary medical assistance he/she needs. Help us expose the truth and throw out the dirty carpet they have been sweeping the truth under.
