Pinellas County Utilities is currently planning to go to the Board of County Commissioners October 20, 2009 to eliminate the flat rate for single axle trailers. These trailers typically do not exceed 10 cubic yards of 1 ton of debris by volume.
The operators of these containers remove residential trash that garbage trucks cannot handle. The reason for implementing the flat rate 5 years ago was to reduce emissions from idling trucks. Emissions where high due to the long wait at the scales and the flat rate for single axles expedited the process.
According to Pinellas County Utilities they will now be able to expedite the lines using updated software. This does not resolve the fact they only 4 scales, the original reason for having to implement the flat rate.
