Petition: Hands off Skhumba

Sarah Mokwebo, Hlengiwe Patricia Ndlovu and Lerato Motaung stripped during the protest at the main campus saying they were tired of being brutalised. We feel for them. We support their cause. They are brave women. And most importantly #FeesMustFall period.

And boom, there comes Skhumba with his jokes about them. Look, if some politician joked about these women being naked, yes, the campaign to remove him would be justified. But this was said by a comedian. Its meant to be hahaha funny. If comedy is not shocking, then it is not comedy. Jokes are told with the express intent of being funny. That’s what they are, they’re jokes. If the through-line to that laughter comes across something difficult, or offensive, then so be it, but that’s not the end point. If we allow the likes of Skhumba to be censored, then we are allowing comedy to degrade.
