I am a former classmate and was a close friend of Gram when he and I both attended Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL. I had the pleasure of hearing this music legend play in his first band made up of several of my classmates. I also was the news editor of the school paper and Gram was the literary editor.
I have been involved in some form of the music scene for over 30 years now first starting as a DJ in Florida in the mid 60s. I was passing through the DC airport when I saw the newspaper headlines about Gram's untimely death. I could not believe it. He was just hitting his stride then.
However in the short time he was with us he became known as the Father of Country Rock. Just ask other legends like Keith Richards and Emmy Lou what they think of Gram's influence on Rock N Roll. If he had lived to be in his 60s he would certainly have equaled Bob Dylan!
For all his contributions to the history of Rock N Roll with with other legendary groups like The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and singing duets with Emmy Lou Harris; American Music Association "President's Award" in 2003 and ranking Number 87 in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Most Influential Artists of All Time, we petition the Rock N Roll Hall of to induct Gram Parsons into its Hall.
