While watching the 2016 new years's eve fire works in Melbourne I was very saddened to see so much money being burnt up in such a short period of time, all up millions of Dollars in the space of 15 minutes. I sat and wondered about all the people in the world who would never see a fire work because of poor or no eye sight.
I wondered if we cut the fire works by five minutes and used the money to donate to an organisation such as "Fred Hollows", how many thousands of people could be given the gift of sight not just for a night but for a life time.
I wondered if Melbourne was the first city in the world to do this then how many other city's may follow suit. How proud could Melbourne be of this achievement. Maybe ending the fire work display with a fire work in the shape of an eye.
We the people of Melbourne ask that our new year's eve fire works be cut by 5 minutes every year and that the money saved be used to give the gift of sight to those who otherwise will never have the chance of seeing a firework or anything else.
Let Melbourne lead the way in showing what a progressive and forward thinking country Australia is to the rest of the world. Who knows what chain reaction we might start.
