Last year (2011), Norway's Child Protective Services took away two young toddlers (Avigyan -3yrs & Aishwarya- 1 yr) from their parents under the pretext that they were not being raised properly.

The reason was that the toddlers were sleeping in the same bed as their parents and they were being fed by hand. This was totally insensitive to the cultural differences between Norwegian society and Indian society.

Indian toddlers often sleep in their parents room and Indians eat with their hands. Should the children of Norwegian expats in China be taken away from their parents for not using chopsticks? Should the children of Norwegian tourists dressed in bikinis be taken away for exposing inappropriately in front of their children? These suggestions are sure to shock Norwegians. They why can't the Norwegian child protective services be culturally sensitive rather than look at the world through their own narrow self righteous prisms on what is acceptable and what is not?

True they have a role in protecting children from abuses. However, that role has to be exercised judiciously in protecting the best interests of the children rather than making frivolous and reckless conclusions that could destroy families.

25Jan Norway may hand over custody to uncle of children after the intervention of Indian government. Seems to be a face saving measure. However, the underlying issue of the conduct of child protective services remains. This petition will remain open until the custody is officially transferred.

We the undersigned appeal to Norway's prime minister to free Avigyan & Aishwarya from the child protective services and return them to their parents immediately.

The Free Avigyan & Aishwarya petition to The Office of the Prime Minister was written by Pinakin and is in the category Children's Rights at GoPetition.
