Seychelles Media Commission

Seychelles

The recent developments in the field of telecommunications have improved considerably the way we communicate with one another. In Seychelles, the arrival of the optic fiber has tremendously improved digital and instant communications. More and more people are getting connected to each other and know better what's going on within the community and beyond.

However, an alarming trend has also been noted whereby instead of focusing on issues that really matter some people are using the Internet in general, and the social media in particular, to sow division, spread rumours and insults. Personal attacks seem to be on the rise.

To promote a responsible use of the Social Media, and Facebook specifically, and to encourage all people in Seychelles to work continuously for reconciliation, justice, and peace, we have decided to launch this petition in order to draw the attention of our leaders and the entire population on the seriousness of the matter.

REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES

FACEBOOK FOR PEACE INITIATIVE

We believe that God has blessed humanity with the gift of intelligence, which has enabled the human family, under His Providence, to make tremendous progress in global telecommunications.

We believe that all means of social communications should be used for the greater good of each person and the entire human family.

We believe that only reconciliation, justice, and peace can make our nation great in God’s sight and a leading model for all other nations.

That is why we, members of Facebook groups in Seychelles, pledge:

1. To use Facebook as a platform to promote love, unity in diversity in our country.

2. To encourage our leaders to continuously work for reconciliation, justice, and peace in truth for all members of our national family.

3. To share our views in total respect for the integrity and the dignity of all persons regardless of their religious faith, colour, gender, political or philosophical affiliation.

4. To abstain from all language or action that can jeopardize peace building in our country.

5. To work with all to make sure that Facebook is not misused to spread hatred and division among citizens and residents of Seychelles.

We ask God’s forgiveness for all the wrongs we have done against Him and against one another through our posts on the Internet. We also ask the forgiveness of our brothers and sisters for any wrongdoing on Facebook.
Together, with the help of Almighty God, we can transform our society for better.

Mahe, 30th January 2016.
