50 years ago the Cuban Revolution succeeded in gaining independence for Cuba. From this moment the United States of America, a country born out of its own revolutionary struggle for independence began to impose sanctions on Cuba. For the last 40 years these sanctions have developed into an illegal blockade.

Since 1992 the United Nations General Assembly has passed resolutions calling for the lifting of the illegal US blockade of Cuba. In 2008 the resolution was passed 185 for 3 against and 2 abstentions.

In 2009 the winds of change have started to blow in the USA. These winds of change must also blow on US policy towards Cuba. The US must respect the independence and sovereignty of Cuba and the right of the Cuban people to decide their own political system.

We, the undersigned New Zealanders call on the US Government to end the illegal blockade against Cuba and to normalise relations between the US and its near neighbour.
