Government has indicated that persons who were abroad during demonetization period can deposit old notes after return from abroad. But on return when I approached RBI, they insisted that Customs declaration is necessary and refused the old notes. If the notes were left in the house before going abroad, how can anybody produce Customs Certificate while entering the country after 30th Dec2016?

Govt. of India stated initially that people who were abroad during 8th Nov 2016- 30th Dec 2016 period will be allowed to deposit old notes in specified centers of RBI. This specifically included housewives also. But later they informed that those returning from abroad should obtain a Customs certificate that the old notes are being brought back from abroad and fixed the amount also as Rs. 25000 (Max). When you go abroad, you will not know that demonetization will take place in future and if you wanted to change rupees into foreign currency, it is changed and one will not carry rupees any more. While going abroad, anybody will leave some money in the house locker so that on return you have some money for immediate expenses on return. In such case, it is not possible to obtain any Customs Certificate on entry. I am a house wife and the money is my savings. I left India on 17th April 2016 and returned on 21st Jan 2017. When I approached RBI at Chennai on 22nd Feb 2017, they insisted that I should submit a Customs Certificate for the amount and refused my deposit of old notes. The money should be accepted by RBI on production of exit entry documents, Aadhaar and PAN card. Proper justice should be served to such cases immediately.
