PETITION DEMANDING FOR THE USE OF ELECTRONIC VOTING FOR THE GENERAL ELECTIONS IN 2019. #NIGERIAELECTRONICVOTING2019

THE PETITION SEEKS TO GET 1 MILLION SIGNATURES DEMANDING FOR AND CALLING ON THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION TO AMEND APPROPRIATE SECTIONS OF THE ELECTORAL ACT TO ALLOW FOR A FULLY ELECTRONIC VOTING SYSTEM IN THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA.

It is with grave concern that we draw your attention to the fact that in Nigeria we continue to have post-elections disputes years after the elections have been concluded and elected persons have taken office.

Democracy has suffered set-backs in Nigeria because elections have been violent, riddled with vote buying, over voting, ballot snatching and other malpractices.

Nigerians, over years, have failed to get full, proper and representation from elected persons because our votes do not count.

We draw your attention to the fact that in this age of digitalization Nigerian laws do not recognize electronic or digital voting or the use of electronic or digital devices for elections giving rise to and institutionalizing all the problems that accompany the manual elections.

The continuing use of the manual system of voting without any allowance for electronic voting has given official seal to many of the electoral malpractices that we experience in Nigeria today.

WHEREAS: INEC is empowered to manage and administer elections in
Nigeria.

WHEREAS: The National Assembly is empowered to make laws for the federation.

WHEREAS: The Electoral Act 2011(as amended) does not allow for electronic voting.

WHEREAS: Elections in Nigeria have been far from being free, fair, transparent and credible leading to long judicial processes by losers.

WHEREAS: The economy has suffered loses from delayed and unstable governance, costs of litigation and re-run elections.

WHERE AS: Over 100 million Nigerians have access to or use digital devices in form of telephones in their everyday life.

WHEREAS: Card Readers were used for the 2015 elections with an above average success rate.

AND WHEREAS: The oft repeated statement that Nigeria is not ripe for Electronic Voting is no longer tenable;

THEREFORE: We, the undersigned, demand that INEC IMMEDIATELY and UNCONDITIONALLY sends a bill for the amendment of the Electoral Act, to the National Assembly, to allow for electronic voting and use of electronic devices for all elections in Nigeria including party primaries, local government elections, state houses of assembly elections, gubernatorial elections, National Assembly elections and presidential elections beginning from the 2019 general elections.

We also demand that the National Assembly pass the amendments without unconditionally and without delay in time for the 2019 general elections.

This must be the irreducible minimum for any election in Nigeria beginning from the 2019 general elections.
