In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled the teaching of creationism as science in public schools to be unconstitutional, irrespective of how it may be purveyed in theological or religious instruction.
Intelligent design has been represented as an alternative explanation to evolution in recent decades, but in 2005 its "demonstrably religious, cultural, and legal missions" have been ruled unconstitutional by a lower court.
Despite these court rulings, there have been continued efforts of local and state school boards to evade the court rulings and re-introduce religious-based, non-scientific material in public schools.
These efforts take several different forms, all ultimately designed to dilute the sharp distinction the courts have made between the scientific content of evolution and the religious basis for creationism and intelligent design.
To prevent the need for further lawsuits to defend on a case-by-case basis the integrity of scientific instruction, we request that the federal congress must unequivocally forbid that creationism and intelligent design be presented as fact in public schools.
Note that this petition is based on a petition introduced in the United Kingdom in order to solve a similar problem called “Creationism in Schools Isn’t Science”.
Creationism or intelligent design is widely and officially acknowledged by scientists to be contrary to scientific fact.
With this in mind, we as a people demand that creationism not be presented as valid scientific fact, nor should creationist resources be promoted in publically funded schools or in any youth activities held on publically funded school grounds.
The Creationism isn't Science petition to United States Government was written by Travis Piser and is in the category Education at GoPetition.
