Knox County schools just adopted a local, organic, diet for its school-children this year. Many of you may not be aware that much of the food our children consume in schools is "food-grade," but not necessarily "retail-food grade." The "Tyson" chicken that is purchased for schools is less-than-retail-grade quality. Is this acceptable? Unequivocally, no. Not only is a lot of it not fit for human consumption, it is also filled with dangerous preservatives, hormones, and toxins. This petition is simply to support allowing our public school children to participate in gardening and canning.
Unfortunately, many of these skills have been lost with the advancement of technology and fast food. But, for the health and education of our children, it shouldn't be.
This petition requires no money and no commitment from you. The only commitment from the school is that children be allowed to participate in gardening. (Hey: with all of the Common Core standards in place now, let's at least keep the food local, huh?) All it requires is your signature, which states that you are content with your child participating in the harvesting of his/her own garden food, to be used to feed our kids while they attend their government-required educational institutions. We ensure that they are eating healthy, while learning valuable skills to utilize outside of school. Gardening trumps video games any time!
I am signing this petition in order to allow my child(ren) to participate in organic gardening, which will provide lower-cost, healthier, lunches to all public school children in my county. I understand that I am under no obligation to do anything more at home.
All I request is that at least thirty minutes of my child's school day consist of his/her participation in harvesting healthy, locally grown, vegetables for his/her school lunch.
