In 1718 Franciscans and Spanish representatives established the first mission in San Antonio to acculturate and Christianize the native population and make them Spanish citizens. Within 13 years, 5 more missions were established along the San Antonio River.
A Native American Community Center built in District 3 would celebrate the missions' history and honor the heritage of the families descended from mission Indians.
