Save the Campus School.

To the Provost:

We understand you have been tasked with the immensely difficult project of determining a solution to the sustainability of the Boston College Campus School. We deeply respect the enormity and far reaching affects of this dilemma and greatly appreciate the myriad of perspectives you have to consider.

In addition we understand that you must weigh an immense number of variables, the majority of which those outside of the decision making process are not aware of. With that said, if the committee has not done so, please take a moment and consider the Boston College Campus School’s impact on BC varsity athletes and how we believe its removal would be devastating.

We are ignorant in regard to the details of the financial feasibility of sustaining the Campus School. However, we believe strongly that removing the school from Boston College would ultimately sever the incredible bond with student athletes as well as the Boston College Community as a whole. It would essentially devastate access to campus school students and we believe ultimately eliminate the cherished interactions between athletics and the campus school. This would be an absolute tragedy and would dwarf any financial consequence and maintaining the school. This is because the Campus School has had LIFE CHANGING EFFECTS on BC students, alumni, and us as student athletes. Matt Ryan, Mathias Kiwanuka, Troy Bell, Jim Unis, Jarrod Dudley, Mark Herzlich and countless others have been shaped by their experiences interacting with Campus School students, and in the case of some athletes, even regularly volunteering at the school.

The campus school has played a part in motivating student athletes to undertake service missions during their time in undergrad. It has also helped fuel inspiration for the creation of non-profit organizations started by several former BC athletes. Furthermore there are even some former BC athletes who now work in helping careers like child care, nursing, and education due in part to their exposure to the campus school.

Please consider the perspective of the Boston College varsity athlete in your decision. Boston College is a Catholic Jesuit entity whose mottos include “For the Greater Glory of God” and “Men and Women for Others.” We as current and former Boston College student athletes truly believe this and live this. Perhaps the following question should be asked, “How can we (BC) justify building a multi-million dollar campus expansion but at the same time remove from campus a service which helps children who are unable to care for themselves? The Boston College Campus School is a piece of the school which genuinely carries out what BC is all about.

We believe the benefits of keeping it open, operating, and on campus extends far beyond any financial burden. In fact we believe it is Boston College’s duty.
