Although the Bahá'í Faith is recognized as an independent world religion by the United States government and most other governments around the world, the Iranian government persecutes and discriminates against the members of the Iranian Bahá'í Community. These abuses are documented by the U.S. State Department: http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2007/90210.htm. Among these many injustices, one of the worst is the systematic denial of university education to the Baha'is.

This litany of human rights abuses during the past three decades has resulted in the government of Iran being censured repeatedly in resolutions from the United Nations, the United States, etc. Over the years, a clear pattern has emerged in which the Iranian government seeks to further deprive the Bahá'ís of basic human rights but then withdraws if there is an international outcry.

Your voice on behalf of your student organization would carry considerable weight in this regard.

We the undersigned organizations, condemn and speak out against the actions of the Iranian Government in their denial of access to higher education to Baha'is.

We support the endeavors of the Duke Baha’i Club and encourage the leaders of Duke University to uphold the University’s core values by speaking out against the Iranian regime in a letter to designated UN/Governmental officials.
