Currently at the hospitals around Australia all baby have a hearing test. When parents are told their baby is Deaf they feel shock and scared. They don't know anything about Deafness or Auslan. The doctor tell them their baby needs to be fixed so tell them have a cochlear impact or hearing aid. The doctor never tells them about Auslan some tell don't let your child sign because then they will never speak. That is not true sign language helps speech development.
When children don't learn Auslan they often don't have a first language. Many children grow up with:
-Poor language skills
-Poor social skills and emotional issues
-Language delay
-Are more at risk of mental health issues.
This impact Deaf children and their families for the rest of their lives. They have communication problems, are behind at school and don't have a functioning first language or even a second language (English).
We need government funded visits from Deaf Auslan users in hospitals when new parents find out their child is Deaf. This Deaf person will education the parents about deafness and ways to communication with their child
