After the immense pressure put on the National Union of Students in the summer of 2011, sabbatical officers across the country went back to their students’ unions and consulted those we represent. UCLan Student Union’s student council voted in favour of another National Demonstration.
We support it. We’re witnessing an unprecedented attack on higher education, students, and young people in a wider context. But the information we have received from the event’s organisers has been insufficient, and we need answers. Time is short. Whilst we appreciate that plans may be in formulation, if we do not have this information by October 25th, UCLan SU will not be attending the national demonstration. It must be made aware that for Unions based more than an hour from London, effective plans cannot be made without sufficient information. What are unions, like ours meant to tell students when they ask about the demo? At this point, we know very little.
We, the undersigned, demand from the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts:
- The externally conducted risk assessment that has been promised;
- Confirmation of an official demonstration route (not just an assembly point) agreed by the organisers and the police;
- Access information for disabled students;
- Information about the presence of stewards, and if those stewards will be trained;
- Information about NCAFC’s public liability insurance.
Our students’ safety always comes first.
