The Kankakee County 4-H Extension Office sent out a letter stating that all 4-Hers are now required to wear a helmet during any riding event at the Kankakee County 4-H Horse Show at the fair this year.

Many older 4-Hers feel this is a right being taken away from them as they know how to ride, how to fall, and feel that the helmet is unsafe for them. During speed events these young adults feel that the helmet is making it more hazardous than without a helmet on. The IHSA Rodeo does not even require the use of a helmet! A helmet can alter balance and sight.

We feel the Sr. Class should be able to choose whether or not we want to wear a helmet for a specific class or not. As 4-Hers we are supposed to be learning how to participate in government policies that will affect our lives and we are always pushed to be leaders.

Sr. Class (ages 14 and up) should be able to choose whether or not they want to wear a helmet for riding classes at the Kankakee County 4-H Horse Show.
