Recent newspaper articles have stated that there may be major budget cuts to the Tasmanian police force in the coming months.

There are suggestions of replacing police officers from Tasmania's 9 PCYC centres with civilian staff.

This will have major affects throughout the community due to the PCYC roll of offering recreational activities for high risk youths throughout Tasmania.

Retired police officer Kim Smith, who dedicated about 35 years of his career working at PCYC's, warned against withdrawing police from Tasmania's nine PCYC centres.

He said having police at the clubs enabled officers to foster relationships with their communities.

He said the relations led to greater community support and co-operation, a reduction in crime and a better public perception of police.

"Working with the community in these centres means with everyone from wayward teens and the disadvantaged to the refugee communities," Mr Smith said.

"We're specialists trained with drug and alcohol education, social work and suicide prevention but are also in a position to build a valuable rapport.”

"It breaks down the wall between police and the community because you take those relationships with you when you see people on the street."

Without the police officers the PCYC will not be able to provide as much service to the community.

I support the Tasmanian PCYC and call for Lin Thorpe, the minister of police and the state government to keep the police officers in their respective PCYC's.
