Target:
The Prime Minister, 10 Downing St.
Region:
United Kingdom

Some companies currently believe that they can "reserve the right to destroy any data, content, functionality or usability automatically without warning the user." from devices which have been purchased outright by the consumer causing them to no longer meet the purpose for which they were bought.

A physical parallel might be a car company removing your petrol, steering wheel or even the engine and leaving the car in that state. You may be able to push it to the shops but it would no longer function as purchased.

The justification being used is not dissimilar to the company not liking the spoiler you have added or that you fitted another manufacturer's engine, or that they don't like the way you are driving.

In the physical world, it is impractical and costly for the company to do this, however, in the digital connected world, a company may achieve this on specific machines or ALL machines at the touch of a button and at little or no cost to themselves other than reputation. If the company is large enough, this damage to their reputation may not affect them significantly.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of the United Kingdom to protect the digital rights of consumers against unscrupulous companies.
