Friends of Save Saginaw Dogs

The Saginaw City Council is considering legislation that will enact breed specific laws and arbitrary dog ownership limits to deal with the city's current issues. The council is proposing using an outdated and incomplete CDC list of "dangerous breeds" to require owners of those breeds to;

1) pay a one time registration fee of $50;

2) post a city issued sign on the owners house or the dog house indicating a dangerous dog's presence;

3) require the dog to be muzzled when walked.

The Council also purposes limiting dog ownership to 3 dogs.

The CDC itself does not support breed specific legislation and states multiple reasons why their list should NOT be used for breed specific legislation
Major relevant organizations have adopted formal positions against breed specific legislation.

There is overwhelming evidence that shows breed specific legislation is NOT effective. There is no published data that shows owning more than 3 dogs poses more of a hazard to the public.

There is an abundance of recommendations and sample alternative dangerous dog legislation that is not breed specific and would be far more effective in protecting the citizens of Saginaw.
