Haskell Year-Round Academy is a proven success. Since 2003 ISAT reading scores have improved 47.9%, and math scores have improved 34.8%. The test scores are higher than any other school in Rockford with comparable demographics. Student motivation and behavior are excellent.

All that is threatened, however, because District 205 administration is not giving Haskell students the same rights as all other elementary students in Rockford. The administration has indicated that Haskell students will NOT be allowed to be "grandfathered in" and remain at Haskell next year. They will be required to attend their zone school or Lewis Lemon Elementary.

The administration's goal is to bring Lewis Lemon to capacity. However, 90% of Haskell parents say they will not send their children to Lewis Lemon. The plan will not work.

As stated in a Rockford Register Star editorial about Haskell on April 4, 2010: "Changing the school calendar alone didn’t lead to the improvements. The hard work of administrators, staff and teachers and how they made the calendar work for them and their students were key."

Just like at other schools, students must be allowed to be "grandfathered in" at Haskell in order to save this proven learning community.

We, the undersigned, call on the Rockford School Board to give equal rights to current students of Haskell Academy, allowing them to be "grandfathered in" at Haskell for the 2011-2012 school year.
