On Wednesday january 19th 2011, A car travelling into Abertysswyg hit the chicane outside Rhymney comprehensive school and overturned.
Apart from the chicane, there is no other provision for anyone to cross this busy stretch of road. I myself, have struggled to cross the road, using the area on the road with my children. I have witnessed many others experiencing the same problems as myself. This road has a children's comprehensive school to the side of it.
Cars speed up and down that road, having no thoughts or regards for the safety of any pedestrians trying to cross the road. The chicane is situated right in a sun blind spot, if you drive through there on a sunny morning, you cant see a thing as you reach the chicane, whether there are pedestrians in the road or cars coming towards you. Adequate provisions need to be made, so cars are not forced into the paths of on coming traffic to make a safer route through, speed restriction and a safer crossing area, so that NO other family need to experience an accident there.
Also, the school has now stopped anyone from dropping off and picking up their children from on the school premises, forcing them to double park on the main road and children to weave in and out of parked and on coming traffic. There is a serious risk of accident on this road the way it is at the moment.
We, the undersigned, call for the head of engineering services at caerphilly County borough Council to make adequate provision for the chicane to be removed and replaced with a safer crossing area and parent parking, to ensure that there is NO more risk of loss of life or serious injury, along with a speed reduction to prevent this road being used as a race track.
We agree that there should be a raised crossing and speed bumps or speed camera rather than the chicane.
