We the artists of Kenya noting with appreciation that, the constitution of the republic of Kenya recognizes culture as the foundation of the nation and as the cumulative civilization of the Kenyan people;
Concerned about the deliberate stigmatisation and marginalisation of the indigenous art and culture sector by successive governments in Kenya;
Concerned that artists especially those who practice cultural art, are treated as mere entertainers whose unique artistic skills are undervalued and often abused by public officials and the market;
Recognizing that art is the medium through which culture is communicated to society and the world;
Aware that most advanced nations, strategically exploit their endogenous art and cultural heritage as the basis for their social and economic development;
PETITION
Move this petition which demands that, the powers that be, namely the Government of Kenya and the Legislature act with expediency to implement the ideal expressed in the country’s constitution which recognizes culture as the foundation of the nation and in particular to:
a. Establish a national art and culture day (Siku ya Sanaa na Utamaduni).
b. Formulate a policy and legislation that will mainstream art and culture in all sectors of Kenya’s economy.
c. Invest in the development of art and culture as a productive industry.
d. Establish a fund to support, nurture and develop creative artistic and cultural skills in the country.
e. Re-instate and integrate art and culture as a core component of the nation’s curriculum and education system at all levels.
f. Establish cultural centres and libraries in all counties.
g. Establish a national commission on the promotion of art and culture.
