As of Tuesday, January 4th, 2011, the students of Hilo Intermediate School were instructed over an announcement that jackets and such were now required to be worn underneath the uniform t-shirt, rather than the normal way of wearing them, over your shirt.
The introduction of this rule came at an inconvenient time, the middle of the winter season, when it is very cold. Students did not have enough time to properly prepare for this new rule. Students do know of the sweatshirts available for purchase, but as a lot of the students cannot afford new clothes, especially sweaters that they would not use in a few months due to weather, or next year, they feel it is not very practical. They also know that long sleeves underneath our uniform shirt are another option.
However, this poses another problem, as removing the long sleeved shirt/jacket would require removing the uniform first.
Signees of this petition request that jackets would be allowed to be worn over the uniform, and that students and parents will have a direct say in what goes into the Dress Code and Uniform Policy.
