As humans we go through periods in our lives when we are very happy, as well as those when we are sad, depressed, angry, the list goes on. However, there are many people, who sadly go through periods in their lives when they aren't happy at all, they go through a time where they become very mentally confused, angry, very moody.

These periods can be triggered by hormonal changes (especially common in teenagers and mid-aged adults), people who have been teased/bullied/harassed, and by people who are frustrated with the world because the societal promises of a life of fortune and happiness were not met. Some people unfortunately get so deep into these periods of unhappiness that their behaviour begins to change, a perfectly calm and happy person may become a very confused, angry, rebellious and destructive person.

As much as I'd like to petition for the absolute removal of all tough emotions and stages of life, I do recognize that it would be an unrealistic petition. Instead however I'd like to petition for better help for such people. The confused, angry, rebellious and destructive person may be so controlled by his emotions that he/she really is not thinking and the things he/she does or destroys or says really is none of their fault. Why not? Because if they were not so consumed by their emotions and they were those calm, gentle people they wouldn't do such things; they wouldn't hurt people, they wouldn't destroy property, etc. Such people are often admitted to such places as mental health wards, or if it's really severe, sanitariums or correctional facilities. The treatment people receive here is exactly what they don't need. They are locked up, the food they receive is less than satisfactory and the people who are supposed to help them get better (i.e. the psychiatrist), really just focuses on the crime they committed or on their "problem behaviours," rather than trying to help them find happiness in their lives again.

The other big mistake these facilities make is that they don't allow patient's any freedom or control over their own lives, they aren't allowed to have anything of "risk," and aren't allowed to leave until the psychiatrist thinks they're ready. Those who fight to leave (and really who wouldn't) are either beaten, or (what's still legal) sedated with drugs. The argument society has is, "we need to protect them and the rest of the people." The problem with such a way of thinking is that how does the angry, confused and rebellious person feel? It's not that I'm ignoring the need to protect life and the planet, what I do want to suggest is that there is a better way, and that's what this petition is all about. After much thinking about the issue and both perspectives on it, I think the the better way is to first help to bring back the happiness to their lives, if the person doesn't have family members or close friends, there are various services which can hire social-worker like people or sometimes called "nurses," to spend time with the person.

The "nurse," or social worker should take much time to understand the person's life challenges, as well as their likes/dislikes. The caregiver should also understand how to help a person when if ever in a "crisis" time; which I believe is simply to ask the person "What's Wrong?" being a good listener and then simply trying to bring the person back to a calm state (and there are effective ways to do this) and really try to empathize. I hope it is now understood that there is a better way. Thank you for reading.

I, the undersigned, call on the Ontario Medical Association to revisit how people with emotional struggles are helped.
