Single occupant cars are responsible for 70% of the traffic volumes and almost 97% of city carpark spaces. There is a huge and growing infrastructure requirement to maintain the status quo (freeways, traffic lights, over-passes, parking stations, lifts, power infrastructure).

By allowing free parking for scooters, motorcycles and bicycles on footpaths, under bridges and similar locations where it doesn't impede the flow of pedestrians, we can make a huge impact on this burgeoning problem. In some more popular CBD areas, footpath metering could be introduced if required to modify the popularity and encourage additional spaces further from the CBD.

Registration rebates for motorcycles would provide an additional incentives to reduce car use - one car families could be encouraged. Encourage motorcycle, scooter and bicycle riding to reduce the infrastructure requirements in our major cities.

We, the undersigned, call on the Australian Government to sensibly use a portion of its GST and other State sourced revenue to preferentially support those State and local Governments that allow motorcycles, scooters and bicycles to park on footpaths and in other locations close to major CBDs - that don't impede or compromise the rights of pedestrians. Encouragement such as this will reduce the numbers of cars requiring city parking spaces and reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and fuel use.
