Townsville will “play host to a Mardi Gras spectacular of drag shows, pride parties, hair and fashion events” giving the members of the gay and lesbian population “a chance to celebrate their lifestyles loud and proud”.

Townsville will play host to a Gay Mardi Gras, on September 17-19 2010, as per information provided by the Townsville Bulletin, on 10 August 2010

We as citizens of Townsville are concerned about the negative impact of such an event on our families and especially on our children. The Mardi Gras will add to the “sexualization” of children who may be exposed to the event and promote promiscuity, and we are against that whether it be heterosexual or homosexual.

As to the planned event we do not want the lifestyles of the gay and lesbian population to be celebrated in public, and therefore do not want this event to be hosted in Townsville and its region. It is not our intention to judge these people, but to give us the choice whether to be part of their lifestyle.

Therefore, we urge the PCYC Welfare Association including its local branch in Aitkenvale, and the Council of Townsville, its leaders, and Mayor Cr Les Tyrell to reconsider their decision to approve, and not to approve to host this and similar events in the future. We think that an event like this is not promoting the values and lifestyle we want for our children and our young families in Townsville.

The Petition against Gay Mardi Gras in Townsville petition to Townsville Council and PCYC Welfare Association was written by Anonymous and is in the category Local Government at GoPetition.
