Sydney University uses 75,000,000 kWh of electricity a year – that's equivalent to the average consumption of over 10, 274 homes. Most of the electricity consumed by Sydney University is generated by burning coal, which is the biggest contributor to climate change. To respond to climate change, we need to immediately begin the transition to a low carbon society.

Together we can change where the university gets its electricity. The university has a social responsibility as a place of learning and research to demonstrate to the wider community that all of our electricity needs can be met by renewable energy. Let's tell the senate, that our education shouldn't cost the earth.

We the undersigned demand that the University Senate immediately:

- Pass policy enabling a transition to 100% renewable energy by 2020.

- Pass policy to cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2020.

- That the reductions in emissions be achieved through environmentally and socially responsible mechanisms. For example, that carbon reductions are not achieved through the creation of monoculture plantations that destroy native habitat but instead through the creation of wind and solar energy.
