It has just been announced in the Grand Forks Herald that there is going to be the construction of a new landfill approx. 4 miles north of Grand Forks ND. The price tax is $10-11 million. That is just for the construction of the new landfill, not including any costs for closing the old one.
The city is refusing to making any kinds of changes to make the new landfill more environmentally safe and practical for years to come. By making the new landfill more of an "environmental center" of sorts, where there is a composting program (that will benefit gardeners and the large farming community) and a more intensive recycling program it will benefit not only us and our generation but for many years to come.
We no longer have the luxury to make mistakes. The time has come for action.
We, the undersigned, call on the Grand Forks government, the county of Grand Forks and all appropriate entities to take action to make the new Grand Forks landfill into more than just a landfill.
We call on the hereabove to add to the proposal for the landfill that there will be a composting site that makes compost from food scraps collected from businesses and residences of the places that will be serviced by the new landfill. The compost will be free from added chemicals and can safely be added to gardens and farms that call themselves organic. The compost will be sold to farmers and gardeners reducing the need for chemicals.
There will also be a more intensive recycling program that will involved hand picking of the garbage that is thrown into the landfill before it is buried that will further remove any recyclable materials to prevent them from being added to the landfill. Action will be taken to preserve privacy of materials that may be of a sensitive nature.
