Es besteht die Gefahr, dass im Zuge von Sparmaßnahmen die Abteilung für Slavistik an der Universität Bonn geschlossen wird. Einen entsprechenden Beschluss hat die Philosophische Fakultät gefasst, dieser ist jedoch noch revidierbar.
Die Slavistik befasst sich in Forschung und Lehre mit der Kultur der Slaven, speziell mit ihren Literaturen und Sprachen. Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hat diese Wissenschaft in Deutschland eine bedeutende Entwicklung genommen und wurde als selbstverständlicher Teil der philosophischen Fakultäten an praktisch allen deutschen Universitäten etabliert. Dabei genoss die Bonner Slavistik in der Vergangenheit national wie international einen glänzenden Ruf und pflegte, unabhängig von der jeweiligen politischen Lage, Kontakte und Kooperationen mit Wissenschaftlern und Institutionen in allen slavischen Ländern.
Durch die Schließung der Slavistik in Bonn wäre die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen über die Kultur der osteuropäischen Länder in einem der wirtschaftlich wichtigsten und bevölkerungsreichsten deutschen Bundesländer an Universitäten auf akademischem Niveau erheblich beeinträchtigt.
Die Bedeutung der slavischen Länder für Europa bedarf hier keiner weiteren Erörterung, ebenso wenig die Rolle Deutschlands als natürlicher Partner der osteuropäischen Staaten. Innerhalb Deutschlands spielt Bonn nach wie vor als Sitz zahlreicher Ministerien, der wichtigsten deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisationen sowie als UN-Stadt eine bedeutende und wachsende Rolle. Es scheint unvorstellbar, dass hier eine bedeutende deutsche Universität, die sich um Exzellenz bemüht, sich aus kurzsichtigen Gründen eines Fachs entledigen will, welches sich mit Sprache und Kultur von mehr als einem Drittel der europäischen Bevölkerung befasst.
Sollte der gegenwärtig deutschlandweit zu beobachtende Trend der Schließung slavistischer Institute weiter fortschreiten, wird es in absehbarer Zeit in Deutschland zu einem bedenklichen Defizit an Wissenschaftlern mit Osteuropakompetenz kommen, d.h. es gibt jetzt schon ein solches Defizit.
In dieser Lage wenden wir uns an Sie mit der Bitte, uns in unserem Anliegen zu unterstützen und Ihren Einfluss geltend zu machen, die Slavistik als Wissenschaft an der Bonner Universität zu erhalten. Konkret können Sie dies tun, indem Sie unsere Petition unterzeichnen.

The Slavic department at the University of Bonn is in danger of being closed for economic reasons. The Philosophical Faculty has issued a resolution to this effect but its decision may still be changed.
The university is supposed to cut more than one hundred full positions over the next few years to save some five million Euros. It is being argued that the university is short of this sum because State authorities have failed to provide adequate financial means for education. This may or may not be so, but even if such cuts should be unavoidable they do by no means justify the total liquidation of a discipline so fundamentally important for European integration as Slavic studies.
The Slavic department in Bonn has for many decades enjoyed an excellent reputation nationally as well as internationally and has maintained close contacts with scientists and institutions in all Slavic and in many non-Slavic countries, regardless of the ever-changing political circumstances.
Closing down the Slavic department in Bonn would massively affect academic teaching and the distribution of knowledge about Eastern European cultures in Nordrhein-Westfalen, one of the most densely populated and economically important federal states of Germany.
We will not go into the importance of the Slavic countries for Europe nor the natural role of Germany as a partner to these countries here. These issues are obvious enough. Inside Germany, the UN-city of Bonn is still an extremely important centre and its importance keeps growing; it is the home of many ministries and the most important scientific organizations. It is inconceivable that the University of Bonn – which explicitly aspires to a recognized status of academic excellence – should be short-sighted enough to want to rid itself of a discipline directly concerned with the languages and cultures of more than one third of the European population.
If the present tendency to close down Slavic departments all over Germany continues there will soon be a worrying deficit of experts on Eastern Europe.
We appeal to you to support the case of the Slavic department, to put pressure on the Dean and the Rector of our university and to demand the preservation of Slavic studies in Bonn. One way to do this would be to sign our petition.

Hiermit fordere ich den Fakultätsrat der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Bonn sowie die anderen damit befassten Gremien und Entscheidungsträger dazu auf, den Beschluss zur Stilllegung der Abteilung für Slavistik des Institutes für Kommunikationswissenschaft rückgängig zu machen.
Durch die Schließung der Slavistik an der Universität Bonn wäre die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen über die Kultur der osteuropäischen Länder in einem der wirtschaftlich wichtigsten und bevölkerungs-reichsten deutschen Bundesländer an Universitäten auf akademischem Niveau erheblich beeinträchtigt.
Es scheint unvorstellbar, dass eine bedeutende deutsche Universität, die sich um Exzellenz bemüht, sich aus kurzsichtigen Gründen eines Faches entledigen will, das sich mit Sprache und Kultur von mehr als einem Drittel der europäischen Bevölkerung befasst.

I hereby call on the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn as well as other individuals and administrative bodies involved to retract their decision to close the Slavic department of the Institute for Communication Sciences at the University of Bonn.
