151. Degrassi: the abortion episodes

The N, the cable network here in the United States which airs the Canadian television show Degrassi:Then Next Generation, is refusing to air the first two episodes of the new season. Due to the nature of the episodes, in which Manny, 15, becomes pregnant with Craig's, 16, baby and decides that abortion is the way to go. Although it is a touchy subject, it is also a very real subject for today's youth. The show has dealt with sexuality, rape, cutting, child abuse, death and drug abuse, among other topics.

Pregnancy, abortion and the side effects of both, only seem like the next step for the show. With this petetion, we hope to show The N, that there is a need to show these ommited episodes.

154. Ban Online Journals

Ban these horrible ideas that are trapping the youth of America in computers by lurring them and convincing them that the in corwd alone is expressing concerns that others believe to think is the "cool" thing to do. These "journals" are being used to find out inside stories and useless facts that are consuming Americas' future by keeping the countless hours on this horrible machine. Plus the people that use them make themselves sound like idiots and tells me that they have no lives. That is all.

155. Help Our Midget Football Teams

The Youth of Front Royal and Warren County need the Board of Supervisors to have the County of Warren pay the annual light bill charged by the County for the use of Bing Crosby Stadium and surrounding practice fields. Rising expenses in football equipment has financially strapped the league which has been a staple of this comunity for almost 50 years.

The Front Royal Midget Football Leaque receives NO co-sponsoring funds or help from the Waren County Parks and Recreation Dept. Expenses can be as much as $30,000 per year for field fees, lights, gaming policing, insurance, new equipment and for old equipment to be refurbished.

157. Stop MTV from infuencing our society with violence

MTV has influenced our youth with violence, drugs, alchohol, and other forms of explicit content. I have noticed children and teens are growing more and more cruel, out of reality, and stereotypical and I belive that MTV should consider this open mindedly before showing some of the videos and shows that they do.

161. MTV Get Off The Air!

MTV is not about music anymore. It is about fashion, fame, and fortune. The "music" videos they play shows this clearly. Mainstream bands like Blink 182, NSYNC, and rappers like 50 Cent and Nelly are only in the business because it offers money. MTV is corrupting the youth of this and other nations, and needs to be brought down. I say this, and would fight to the death any of my strong-held opinions... MTV GET OFF THE AIR!

162. Bring youth entetainment to Middletown

About a week ago, skateboarding was pretty much banned from middletown, although i dont skateboard, there are many people who do. I think that skatebording and bikeriding are about the only things to do on weekends or school holidays, or even just after school with in walking distance of homes. I propose that middletown do something to encourage teens to get out and hang out with friends and family rather than be public disturbances or drug addicts.

The following people of middletown valley agree with me and would like to see something done to entertain the youth of our community.

164. Young Offenders Act

Accused has long record
Linked to gang rape when only 11

By TOM GODFREY -- Toronto Sun

A 17-year-old male charged in the shooting death of Chemere Roache has been in and out of youth court since he was 11 for various offences including rape, armed robbery, auto theft and weapons offences.

The youth now faces second-degree murder and attempted murder charges in connection with Wednesday's shooting outside a Rexdale nightclub that left Roache, 18, dead and her boyfriend injured.

A second suspect in the shootings, Christopher St. George Clarke, 24, surrendered to police on Thursday. Officers intensified their search yesterday in the Jane St.-Finch Ave. area for two other suspects, Matthew Chiemaka Weir, 21, and Devon Ramdeen, 24.

Police said the 17-year-old North York youth, who lives with his single mother and older brother, has a long rap sheet.

"It was only a matter of time before we got him again," an officer said yesterday.

The youth was implicated after three other minors were charged several years ago with gang-raping a 13-year-old girl on her way home from school. But he was never charged because of his age.

A provincial court judge said the boy, who removed the jeans of the Grade 7 student and had sex with her in a bedroom, was the group's ringleader.

Police said the boy taunted officers that he couldn't be arrested because he was under the age of 12, and couldn't be charged under the Young Offenders Act.

"He was arrogant, self-confident. He knew he had us," an officer said at the time. "He was fully aware of his rights. He was using the YOA to protect himself from the law."

The judge who presided over the trial of the three youths in the rape case said he wasn't impressed with the boy's testimony.

"He was a complete liar in giving evidence," the judge said.

"The only thing I believe from what he gave us was his name, address and date of birth."

The boy was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment and serve three months in a juvenile home. He was placed in temporary custody of the Children's Aid Society.

"He will be back," an officer whispered in court after sentencing. "It's only a matter of time before he kills someone."

Roache's mom Carol said she was concerned by the youth's constant run-ins with the law.

"He was always getting into trouble from the time he was small," she said yesterday from her Etobicoke home. "But to bring it this far that someone has to die, there's no words for me to say. I'm just shocked."

Roache said her daughter's funeral will be held either next week or on Easter Monday.

Det.-Sgt. Craig Sanson said yesterday more than 10 shots were fired in the hail of gunfire. He said the shooting was sparked by a minor disagreement at the Apollo nightclub between Roache and four men.

"It wasn't much of an argument," Sanson said. "It was a relatively small incident."

Meanwhile, Clarke appeared for a bail hearing at 361 University Ave. court yesterday. He has also been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.

Clarke sat sullen looking in the prisoner's box, dressed in a baggy sky blue FUBU jacket over a grey hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.

He was remanded in custody until April 24.

165. Bring Youth Wrestling To Chesterfield County Middle Schools

Please take the time to read and sign our petition to have youth wrestling instated into the Chesterfield County athletics program. It is our attempt to collect as many signatures as possible, to present these signatures to the county school board as a show of support for wrestling in our middle schools.

What effect can wrestling have on our children's character development? Success factors in sports, or anything for that matter, are part God-given (i.e. height and size) and part acquired (i.e. endurance).

Success in wrestling depends most on acquired factors, and unlike most other sports, wrestling does not favor athletes of any particular height, size, weight, muscle type, race or social class, and does not rely on superior vision or hearing. Wrestlers learn, by the nature of the sport, that long-term success has much more to do with the investment made than the 'natural' gifts one is given. Wrestlers learn the value of reparation and hard work, and the role it plays in achieving one's goals. Wrestling provides real-life experiences that build and strengthen character.

Is wrestling a dangerous sport? There is a common misperception among the non-wrestling public that wrestling is a very dangerous sport. Perhaps it's the aggressive nature of the sport, association with 'Pro Wrestling', or perhaps fear of the unknown. Several studies have been conducted in recent years that show wrestling to be safer than many more common sports including football, ice hockey and gymnastics. Most notable in these reports, is wrestling's low percentage of serious, permanent and life-threatening injury in relation to other sports. A quote from USA Wrestling Club Organizing Guide has the following to say
about Risk of Injury: In summary, of the many sports your child can participate in, wrestling is perhaps the most misrepresented, misunderstood, and underrated. The ratio of participation to public awareness is remarkably lopsided. Each year hundreds of thousands of kids participate in this sport, yet the average person knows as much about wrestling as they might know about rugby or polo -- which combined, involve far fewer athletes.
