61. Companies should use only alternatives, not animal testing

Companies have been testing on animals for years and years to better their products.

Enough is enough! It's time to stand up and speak up for those who cannot and boycot and stop these companies from using poor animals to test on their products.

Companies have been breaking limbs, dropping chemicals into eyes, and other things for too long. Say no to these companies!!!

62. Welfare & Drug Testing

The United States government requires an applicant for Welfare to disclose if they have a felony, misdemeanors are not even checked on. The only important basis for help is income and Social Security numbers for all family members. They don't require a drug test or background check.

The State of California has a bill pending #AB2389, Known as RJ's Law, to require random drug testing for these Welfare recipients. The bill basically states 'All Welfare recipients would be randomly tested for drugs. If they test positive, they'd be required a rehab program. If they refuse or don't comply fully the benefits would be revoked.'

This is an issue that cost the law-abiding tax payers millions each year. The cost not only in disbursement but in health care. Why not differ these funds for the good in actually helping people and not just in supporting the habits.

The requirement for employment in the government office is drug testing and background checks. Why not as a recipient of the government funds? It just makes sense! I hope this passes in California but we should demand this practice in all the States!

63. Urine test for welfare checks

Like a lot of folks in this state I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit.

In order to get that paycheck, I am requited to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem.

64. US Horse Owners Against American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act

The proposed American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act legislation is bad for horses, horse owners, the equine industry and the U.S. as a whole.

Those who support the legislation offer no solution to care for the estimated 100,000 unwanted horses annually in the U.S. Supporters of the legislation have been spreading inaccurate information that is driving legislators to act on emotion, and not on true facts.

Please help fight this misinformation and misplaced emotion by signing this petition.

True welfare for horses is keeping horse slaughter legal and regulated in the United States. Horses deserve better than long, arduous trips to Mexico and Canada. Horse owners should not be forced to keep horses they can no longer afford to care for or no longer have a need for.

Banning slaughter and transport to slaughter effectively ends a last chance sale when there is no longer an outlet for unwanted and unusable horses.

66. Stop animal slaughter in the name of religion

Apologists for Ritual Slaughter claim that it is both quick and humane. We say that this imported ritual isn't - it is barbaric, cruel and wholly unnecessary. In addition ritually slaughtered meat should not be clandestinely fed to our kids in their school dinners - as is happening in hundreds of schools up and down the country at present!

Does your kids' school secretly serve up ritually slaughtered meat in their meals? If you don't know then we urge you to find out!

Parents and pupils alike should contact their schools to demand that any ritually slaughtered meat used in school catering be clearly labelled as such, so as to provide freedom of choice for the vast majority of pupils who, quite rightly, have no wish to participate in the most prolific form of animal cruelty practiced in Britain today!

67. ANIMALS FEEL PAIN

The dog in the picture was snatched from the streets by sick thugs.

It’s muzzle was bound so tightly with twine it could barely breathe let alone whimper.

Then callously forced into a sack she was tossed onto a pile of other terrified dogs ready to be butchered for meat.

She was one of the lucky ones because a team of police and volunteers intercepted the shipment and seized her and the other poor dogs.

We urgently need your help in our campaign to free dogs like her from the clutches of this heartless and illegal trade committed by criminals in Thurrock.

We demand severe punishment for anybody who abuses animals in any way.

It makes us sick to the stomach with the problem we have with animal torturers. These people are complete and utter cowards. They pick on defenceless animals because they know they can't fight back, it's disgusting and we feel ashamed to live in a society where animals can be treated this way.

69. Support Tougher Sentences for Animal Cruelty

A group of Brisbane lawyers have formed an organisation to campaign for animal justice. Calling themselves BLEATS (Brisbane Lawyers Educating and Advocating for Tougher Sentences) their major aim is to focus attention on the apparent unwillingness or seeming inability of Magistrates to wield their powers under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

Solicitor Tracy-Lynne Geysen was horrified by the spate of animal cruelty cases reported in the local media and decided to look into what the law was actually doing to deter the ongoing abuse.

“I was watching the news one day recently and a report came on about a dog that was found hanging from a tree. The announcer said the people who found the dog were shocked but no offender had been located,” she said. “Then there was the attempted skinning of a live cat and the rescue of close to one hundred animals from a house in Central Queensland. I wanted to see if justice was being served and I found out it manifestly was not!”

She found she was not alone. A number of equally disgusted lawyers and colleagues came together to form BLEATS and their supporters are growing daily.

“The Animal Care and Protection Act was strengthened in 2002 to provide for maximum penalties of $75 000 or 2 years imprisonment for the most serious of crimes against animals,” she continued. “But judgments such as a $400 fine for killing a dog with an axe or a suspended sentence of 3 months for beating and kicking a dog before hurling it into oncoming traffic makes one wonder how “bad” an offence has to be before more Magistrates enforce their powers.”

After researching this situation it became clear to BLEATS that much of the problem lay in precedent law – that is the Magistrates must look at previous sentences as a guide when sentencing offenders. As the prior sentences handed down were low, a vicious cycle developed.

BLEATS members have realised that to break this cycle they must make fellow lawyers aware of the situation and hopefully encourage them to volunteer as “forceful” advocates representing the RSPCA at these trials. They also want to ensure that low sentences are taken on appeal. Higher sentences at the appellate level would provide Magistrates with precedents for higher (and more appropriate) sentences. This secondary element targets more funding and sponsorship of the RSPCA to ensure appeals can be brought.

BLEATS has set up a website www.bleats.com.au targeting the legal community. Apart from providing more information on the topic, the website calls for anyone interested to contact the RSPCA in relation to providing assistance for the cause.

BLEATS is also spreading awareness by targeting legal publications and the legal industry in general.

70. Free Dexter!

I and my partner have recently spent 6 months in Amsterdam, Holland .

Whilst over there we had the fortune to find the most perfect Jack Russell. Knowing that we had to come back to the UK in 6months time we fully researched how bring him back would work.

The pet’s scheme run by DEFRA explained what he would need.

We then complied with the rules - micro chipped, de flea and wormed. He was also vaccinated against rabies whilst over in Amsterdam which, has one of the lowest cases of Rabies in Europe, in the world! It was in fact one of the first countries to be added to the DEFRA pet passport scheme.

Upon calling the quarantine facility to arrange the stay of our dog we where informed that it didn't matter that he had already spent two months prior to touch down in the United Kingdom with the rabies vaccination in his system. The vaccination he had is the same as he would have in the United Kingdom . But he still had to have a vaccination once he got to the quarantine facilities in the UK .

We would like to know why this is as we have tried and failed to get any answer other than the rhetoric of ‘it’s the law’ as to why our dog has to now have the rabies vaccination in his system for eight months, not six (which has already been proven to be far longer than it takes for the rabies to show itself once vaccination has occurred). Please refer to the DEFRA website for the studies regarding this.

The simple fact that once he’s in quarantine he does not receive a blood test that it is just down to the kennel operatives to notice any difference in his behavioral pattern means that this prolonged stay in quarantine cannot be justified. As clever as he is, he’s still only a canine and he is completely unable to hide any of the signs of rabies, if he would of contracted it before going into quarantine he would still be showing signs of it now.

None of it makes any sense. Indeed the large numbers of civil servants we have spoken to regarding this have agreed that it makes no sense.

Why should we have to continue the heart ache of being separated from him?

If Britain is country of animal lovers, how can its government elected by us the people continue to enforce quarantine laws which have no scientific, national security or health benefit to any of us, yourself included?

71. End Cruelty to Chickens

30 Billion chickens are kept in battery cages around the world every year. 10% will die in their tiny squalid cages from neglet and starvation, and this is just the recorded deaths.

A factory farmed chicken spends its life in darkness, fed growth hormones that make its full life cycle last only 3 months. Imagine going from a baby to 80 years old in 3 months, well that's what happens to chickens. We are not against people eating chickens, we are against chickens being factory farmed.

We want chickens to be kept free range where they have plenty of space to roam around and to not be pumped full of chemicals and growth hormones. Every signature really does help. Please sign.

72. Help Single Parents

We need to help protect the single parents here in America. Why is it we have laws so that gays, different races, and disabled people cant be discriminated against but we have nothing to protect the single working parents of America?

Why is it when you are employed and you miss to much work for taking care of your children that your employer can let you go? Maybe that is why welfare is so high in America.

Who is encouraging single parents to work and get off welfare when they can get fired for raising their children.

Let's stop this from happeninga nd help the single working parents be able to stay off from welfare.

73. Introduce Interest-free Loans/Grants for the Poor & Wipe Off Existing Debt

Introduce Interest-free Loans/Grants for the Poor & Wipe Off Existing Debt.

Poor countries are under a heavy debt burden despite having paid off billions of the original, principle sum. We need a new ethical way of lending money i.e. interest-free, and a more partnership-based, risk sharing method of working with them.

We need to cancel, forgive their current debts and provide interest-free grants/loans, and a more humanitarian partnership based dealings with them.

There has to be a concerted, global effort to develop and implement an interest-free economy which will resolve permanently the debt burden and other related financial problems.

We need your support, voice and action to achieve this.

75. Racing Greyhound Provision in the Animal Welfare Bill

July 31, 2006

During the passage of the Animal Welfare Bill, earlier this year some MP's voted in support of an amendment which would have improved greyhound welfare by raising the priority for a welfare code; thereby determining a regulatory framework for all greyhound racing tracks. However, the Government voted against this on two occasions.

Instead, the Government has only loosely committed itself to welfare codes which probably won't be ready until 2010. I believe that the Government, who takes £70million in tax from this sector, can no longer wring its hands and try to blame someone else.

Of course, the industry itself also has a role to play, and unlike some animal welfare cases, there are funds available which could be put towards improving the welfare of greyhounds.

The government needs to reverse it's position on this and support the amendments.

77. Stop KFC Cruelty

March 08, 2006

Every year over 850 million chicken suffer on KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) factory farms and in the slaughterhouses.

"Every time undercover investigators enter the facilities of KFC's suppliers, they find hideous abuse and suffering. At one KFC "Supplier of the Year" slaughterhouse in West Virginia, workers were caught tearing birds' heads off, ripping them apart, spitting tobacco into their eyes, spray painting their faces, and throwing them against walls—all while the birds were completely conscious and able to feel pain."

Not only this, but they often suffer broken bones from being bred and drug to being top heavy, (and from being roughly handled by workers). They also suffer from painful debeaking. And there is just so much more that the chickens suffer from. And "because KFC is an industry leader and they buy and sell more chicken than any other corporation they have the ability to require their suppliers to implement some basic animal welfare standards."

We must stop this cruelty that is happening today world wide. Organizations like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are already asking KFC to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer. But KFC isn't making any changes. So we need your help. Chickens are probably the most abused animals, and are treated horribly. There is no law against this abuse to chcikens, and we need to change that.

Please sign this petition, and know who your helping. And for more information on KFC cruelty, please visit: www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.
Thank-you, and God bless.

78. Native American Civil Rights

Currently the governing body of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has excluded, denied and discriminated against enrolled members who live off the rancheria.

The governing body, which consists of a selective number of individuals who reside on the rancheria, have year after year, monopolized all elections, and have also closed voting rights to enable only a certain few to sit on each committee that makes all decisions which in the most part "does not" protect the best interest and welfare of the "entire" tribe as a whole.

The current governing body hides behind the facade "claiming" they have the best interest of the "tribe" in mind, but have attempted to ensure only "they" are to benefit from all elections.

Do we as AMERICANS REMEMBER WHY it was we voted for Proposition 1A?

Proposition 1A: is a simple constitutional measure that allows Indian gaming in California. It protects Indian SELF RELIANCE by finally providing clear legal authority for Indian Tribes to conduct specified gaming activities on tribal lands. It allows Indians to SHARE gaming revenues with non-gaming Tribes for use in education, housing, health care and other vitally needed services. DOES YOUR TRIBE actually do this?

Propostion 1A provides revenues for local communities near Indian Casinos for programing for gambling addiction and for state regulatory costs.
It provides for tribal cooperation with local governments and for tribal environmental compliance. The proposition claims that voters vote yes to protect Indian gaming on tribal land, so that the tribes can preserve the only option most Tribes have to get our people OFF of WELFARE. Has YOUR gaming tribe helped you get off welfare??? OR HAVE THEY REFUSED YOU HEALTHCARE or have they denied you, your share of federal grants obtained to take care of your health, education and housing needs?

Have they helped you obtain business loans to help you open your own business to better yours and other Native Americans lives?? Also, the peoples asking for Proposition 1A, in 2000 claimed... They were asking you (the Voters) to take care of ourselves and PAY OUR OWN WAY. But how many of these so called Gaming Tribes have actually done these things for their members and how many tribes have become GREEDY with their new found wealth and have closed voting rights to Native Americans of their tribe so as to keep their voting membership numbers to a low count enabling them to split revenues from their casino amongst a chosen few and to deny others whom they used to obtain large numbers to submit to the federal government in order to obtain grants in which these monies are denied to other Native Americans if they are not one of the so called "VOTING" members.

I wonder just how many actually benefit from these revenues. DO YOU, as a Native American?

It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The Assembly suggested to governments that the Day be observed on the date and in the way which each considers appropriate.

80. The Treatment of Dogs and Cats in Korea

The Treatment of Dogs and Cats in Korea.

Should the brutal treatment and death of a dog or cat concern us more than if the same were done to a cow, or a sheep, or a chicken. It shouldn't, but animals that the "Western world" looks upon as companion animals are treated very differently in Korea.

Many Koreans still believe that if one eats dog meat from dogs that have been tortured to death, it will make them more sexually active. The marketing of dog meat as a health food was initiated and perpetuated by the dog meat dealers to keep their billion dollar businesses going. The rationale behind savagely beating a dog to death lies in the primitiveness that when a dog is beaten they produce high levels of adrenaline hence the selling of their meat as a kind of "natural" viagra for impotence and vitality!

This adrenaline rush is achieved by hanging dogs from ropes on trees and leaving them to slowly strangle to death, and then while still alive, their fur is blowtorched off.

Cats do not hold any position of affection in Korean society. They are not eaten as dogs are but many attempts have been made to eradicate them, not by humane methods, but rather by beating the animals to death in sacks or, in some cases, boiling them alive in large pressure cookers to supply the insatiable demand for another "herbal" remedy - although clearly animals do not fall into this category.

The Korean government does not enforce its animal welfare laws so people make an assumption that farming dogs, slaughtering them and selling their meat is legal. It is not. The sale and cooking of dogs is illegal under Korea's food and sanitation laws.

Imagine being thrown into a cage full of other dogs. A cage so small there's no room to move and let alone stand. A cage so cramped there is no way you can get water or food .. assuming it was even provided to you. One day you are transported in the cage to a dog market.. your last journey, although you don't realise it.

You're pulled out of the cage by a rope tied around your neck and then held by that rope and beaten over and over again on the head with a metal stick...you're bruised, bleeding and concussed. you have no idea what fate has in store for you...you see a man approaching with a long stick..he jabs it into your side, you a feel a wave of electricity surge through your body. you're jabbed over and over again until your last grasps of air are extinguished from your body..

The dead, limp carcass of the dog is then transported again by motorcycle to the processing factory where eager purchasers look out for what they'll put on their dinner table tonight.

The lifeless body is dragged out of the cage and dumped into a huge pot of boiling water amongst other helpless dogs who have received the same fate. The pot is a machine with a fast whirlpool action that spins round and round to remove the fur off the tortured dog.

Once the fur has been removed (a delicacy in itself), the dog is scorched using a blowtorch. The process is now finally complete. The dog now, bearing little resemblance to anything other than a slab of meat is transported back to the shop...

Now, imagine being thrown into sack, pounded against the ground and thrown into a pot of boiling water - trying to scramble out of a pain that singes your body, only to be pushed back under water until you finally lose consciousness.

The pot is a large pressure cooker used to liquefy cats to produce a tonic unfoundedly believed to cure rheumatism and a variety of other ailments.

Now stop imagining. This is not fiction. This is real. What you have just read happened to over 2,600,000 dogs and cats in Korea last year...and if nothing is done, it will happen to over 2,600,000 dogs and cats in Korean again this year.

In fact, the torturing you've just imagined is only a fraction of the cruelty that occurs to dogs and cats in Korea. Cultural myth dictates that dog and cat meat/soups are cures for various ailments and that the more adrenalin you can circulate through an animal's body during its last moments of life ie through making the death a more painful and gruesome one, makes the meat 'taste better'. This encourages dog farmers to enhance the suffering of the dogs...a killing that is devoid of any humanity.

Korean culture as with many other Asian cultures embraces the condemning practice of slaughtering animals for their own consumption, regardless of how the animal suffers in the process. The distinction between the killings in the East and the killings in the West is that the West follow stricter guidelines as to the method of slaughtering and are more heavily regulated by Animal Welfare Laws.

In 1984, the Korean Ministry of Health did outlaw the sale of dog meat, however has done very little, if anything to enforce a law that was only introduced to satisfy the public outcry at the time.

We need to do something to raise the awareness of people living in these countries to a level where they think twice about the validity of their traditions and the means adopted to satisfy them. We need to challenge the way that Koreans currently view their companion animals and force the government to take a more proactive stance against these cruel death sentences.

Source: Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS)

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Please write a letter to the Korean government officials below to take a more active stance in fulfilling their governmental responsibilities in enforcing a law they have already introduced and thereby prosecute people who sell and slaughter cats and dogs for human consumption.

Korea is holding the World Cup next year and will therefore suffer greatly if they are seen to be treating their companion animals without humanity or regard for their welfare. We HAVE to put pressure on the Korean government to clean up their act now or else face international condemnation when the spotlight's on them during the World Cup. For the 2,600,000 plus dogs and cats in Korea awaiting their fate on death row.we owe it to them to put pen to paper and give up 5 minutes of our time to make a difference in this world.

81. Stop cruel deportation of mother of two young US children

Rosalba M. is a Mexican citizen who has been living and working as a housekeeper in the SF Bay Area for approximately the past thirteen years. Her two sons, G.(13) and L.(11) are U.S. citizens who have lived here their entire lives and attend public school in the Bay Area. Rosalba divorced their father some years ago due to his repeated physical abuse. Rosalba was awarded custody of the children and they live with her most of the time. She has sole responsibility for their up bringing. Rosalba is a law-abiding, hard-working, loving mother who is a tremendous role model for her children. She has invested all of her spare time and scarce resources in giving them a better opportunity than she has had in life, including a quality education. G. and L. are good, well-behaved children who are deeply attached to their mother. G. is an honor student. L. has some learning disabilities that require special attention from the school and his mother. Their father takes little interest in the children and has shown little concern for their welfare. He is unemployed, has a criminal record and he and his current wife have refused to pay court-ordered child support for two years.

Following a bureaucratic process, Rosalba has been notified by Homeland Security that she will be deported as an illegal alien on May 3, and that she may not re-enter the country for at least five years. She has consistently cooperated with the immigration authorities and has repeatedly appealed to them to consider the impact of their proposed actions on her children. Section 240A of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides eligibility for relief in cases of hardship to children such as this one. However, her appeals to the immigration service and the courts have been rejected, and the children are now facing the terrifying prospect of having their mother permanently taken away from them by their own Government.

They face an impossible choice:
· Stay in the United States without their mother, dependent on a violent father who has shown little concern for their education or general welfare, or
· Go with their mother to live in one of the poorest regions of Mexico, a country whose language they do not speak, without access to education or financial support
In either case, the impact on their lives will be devastating.

82. South Koreans, Save the Whales!

By the 1970s, commercial whaling had caused 8 out of the 10 great whale species to be commercially extinct. The International Whaling Commission's (IWC's) ban on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Since then, pro-whaling countries have been trying to lift the ban and continue to kill whales by using exceptions to the ban.

Most species of whales are still endangered and there is no humane way to kill a whale. Whales suffer horrible and often prolonged deaths due to brutal and unreliable killing methods used by whalers. They also suffer from being caught in fishing nets of commercial fisheries targeting other species. Instead of making an effort to safely release them, they are brought onboard to die and to be sold for human consumption.

The annual IWC meeting will be held in Ulsan, South Korea in 2005. South Korea has voted against protecting whales. Please sign this petition to let your government know that South Koreans care about whales and about animal welfare and want them to vote in favor of protecting these magnificent animals.

83. Petition in support of Minnesota Mothers and Children

My name is Anne L. Halverson. I am a 21-yr-old mother of a one-year-old son, Aidan. I take motherhood very seriously and I take my employment seriously. In order to be employed and provide the best childcare environment for my son, I rely on a state funded child care subsidy. That means, based on my income, I pay a percentage of my son's child care expenses and the State of Minnesota subsidizes rest.

My son thrives at his day care center, Noah's Ark, in Hopkins, MN. He is cared for by well trained providers who, like me, want him to meet his growth milestones, be happy and well adjusted, understand about sharing, learn about tolerance, and be prepared for kindergarten. My son and I also rely on state subsidized health care. His pediatric clinic monitors his growth, advises me about his medical needs and has helped me become a confident parent. I know how fortunate we are to live in a state that values children by providing these opportunities.

Minnesota's governor, Tim Pawlenty, has proposed a budget that will slash child-care and health care subsidies for single mothers like me and our children. Without the aid of these subsidies, I will be forced to quit my job, surrender my opportunities to advance in the workforce, stay home full time with my child and apply for welfare benefits.

If you believe in and support mothers with young children who want their children in safe, regulated childcare centers; women who are proud to be part of Minnesota's workforce, please sign this petition.

I will present this petition when I speak before a Minnesota Senate Committee that is convening on Tuesday, February 22, at the Minnesota State Capital.

Thank You,
Anne L. Halverson

Please forward this to your friends and family. Thanks.

84. Demand the Philippines Government enforce their Laws banning the eating of dogs

In 1998 the Philippines Government passed an Act banning the slaughter and human consumption. Visit http://sirius.2kat to view said Animal Welfare Act. There is comprehensive detailed information on the above site detailing the atrocities and abject cruelty dogs in the Philippines are having to undergo.

The trade in dog meat must be banned now and the Animal Welfare Act enforced. Dogs are usually sold at markets while still alive, their front limbs dislocated and tied painfully behind their backs and a jagged tin can rammed over their jaws to make them easier to handle. All in blatant disregard of a law that carries a minimal penalty which the police do not bother to even try to enforce.

Let us put an end to this cruelty and allow dogs the dignity and humanity to live alongside of us as our devoted companions as is their right. No dog shall be in the human food chain!

88. End Live Animal Exports from Australia

June 26, 2003

While death and suffering has been endemic throughout the history of the live export industry, Australia's relentless drive to expand its market for 'live exports' has resulted in a corresponding increase in casualties associated with the long-haul overseas trade in live cattle over the past 7 years.

With the resumption of the live sheep trade with Saudi Arabia in 2000, there are now even larger numbers being exported to the Middle East.

After the stress of transportation, all the surviving cattle and sheep face death on foreign soil, many into countries which have no animal welfare laws or, at best, inadequate laws.

They will usually be killed without pre-stunning and often even without adequate restraint facilities. Animals Australia has eye-witness harrowing accounts of slaughter facilities and methods.

The result is inherent and persistent suffering.
