121. Support Dominican University's Easement Request
Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois, is seeking support for an easement to access Thatcher Avenue through a small section of Cook County Forest Preserve land. This project will allow the university to construct a new campus entrance/exit onto Thatcher Avenue, 200 feet south of Greenfield.
The total requested easement area is located at the northern tip of a non-contiguous section of Forest Preserve land. The requested area is 2240 square feet, of which 650 square feet would be paved This represents 1/20th of an acre or 1.3% of the area in question.
This project would support Dominican University's enrollment and relieve traffic congestion on Village streets.
122. Readmission to Flor Angel Hernandez University
Petion about my readmission in the university this coming second semester, 2004-2005. I got dismissed in the curiculum of the university and I need a petition letter to be submitted to the university registrar.
In the process, I need this readmission so that I can enroll next semester in the university since this is only my way to finish my studies, especiallly as I am a fourth year student already and my family have no money to support me in my studies.
123. Addressing the lack of social space on the University of Bath Campus
We feel there is a lack of social space on the University of Bath campus and would like to see the provision of a Junior Common Room for undergraduates.
I, along with my fellow UAB colleagues, wish to stress the importance of campus identity. We believe that a strong identity will bestow a sense of pride, unity, and school spirit, which are integral parts of the college experience. While UAB's campus is beautified with statues representing the principles on which the institution was founded, it is lacking in what the university is working towards: Tradition. By signing below I agree that a statue promoting school spirit should be erected in conjunction with UAB's new undergraduate admissions office/parking facility.
125. Unthrottle Lock Haven Gaming Privileges
As many gamers of the lock haven university campus have noticed, we are unable to play any kind of game online. the latency or pings as gamers call it are in excess of 1000+. We are asking to give gaming a higher Privilege on the list of bandwidth management, Or come to an agreement that the university opens up the bandwidth for gaming after hours.
126. No Increase In University Fees in UK!
The government's plans for the future of higher education in England involves, for full-time undergraduates, likely fees of £3,000 a year.
127. Keep Professor Binta Colley on Faculty
As of Fall 2003 semester, Professor Binta Colley, a fine and outstanding professor of philosophy, education and other related courses faces the possibility of losing her job.
In our education system today, we cannot afford to lose professors with exceptional teaching skills because they are devoted to helping their students gain great knowledge and love for the subject they are embarking.
Professor Binta Colley is one of the most outstanding student-oriented teacher York College or America has today and unfortunately, she was informed that she could be out of a job base on how she teaches and grades the students.
I had the opportunity of taking one of her philosophy classes, and it is unlike any other class that I have taken before. Not only does she use the Socratic method of teaching, but she promotes critical thinking in all areas and also provokes exceptional learning and application out of all her students. No student is left behind. If for any reason a student is experiencing difficulties in any area, Professor Colley is available by phone, office hours, virtual classroom, and email to assist each student in all areas. If by chance she is unable to help you, then professor Colley directs you to the appropriate place.
Great teachers in all areas and levels of teaching should be cherished, appreciated and awarded. If any thing should be done to her, an award should be handed to her. LET US PROTECT OUR HARD WORKING PROFESSORS. KEEP PROFESSOR BINTA COLLEY ON BOARD ACTIVELY!!!
128. Student petition to block proposed contract with PARTA and dissolve Campus Bus Service
Student petition to block proposed contract with PARTA and dissolve Campus Bus Service.
129. Univ of ALABAMA Graphic Design Dept. Funding Request
The University of Alabama's Graphic Design Program is in need of both software and hardware upgrades. We are currently running Mac OS 9.2, Photoshop 6.0, and QuarkXPress 4.1, to name a few, all of which are now outdated. The iMacs in our lab are unable to support the required upgrade to Mac OS X that is needed to run the new versions of these programs.
In order to keep our programs up-to-date, we need to purchase both new computers and current software. We are requesting the funds to ensure the quality of our students' education.
130. No Confidence in the PA SSHE System Administration!
This petition is an opportunity for the students of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to express their feelings of 'No Confidence' in the administration currently running the State System of Higher Education of Pennsylvania.
131. Morning-After-Pill Policy for Purdue University
If a woman has had sexual intercourse and fears she may be pregnant, she can take the morning-after pill. If she is pregnant when she takes this high dosage pill, it can act to kill her pre-born child - a living being. Although no testing has been done to confirm the safety of these high dosages, the FDA has approved this use. Purdue currently makes these pills available to students on request.
132. Save Our Uniforms!
We, the fans of the University of South Carolina football team, urge Coach Lou Holtz to reconsider the design of the new Gamecock uniform.
133. Drinking and Driving Education in Texas
The first place to start regarding increased knowledge and education of drinking and driving as a problem with significant consequences rests before the college years. Middle school and high school administrations only minimally touch the surface in educating young children. For example, Students against Drunk Driving (SADD) is an organization in which students join and sign a written contract stating that no matter the circumstance, he/she will phone home for a ride rather than drive, if intoxicated. It has been argued by parents and educators that such types of organizations essentially promote underage drinking. However, the fact of the matter is that the contemporary mentality among many school age children is that drinking is cool and getting behind the wheel after having a drink can inevitably be observed across the country. Thus, organizations such as SADD serve as accident prevention rather than drinking promotion.
A severe limitation of such programs is that they are optional. SADD is an extra-curricular club that students may opt to join. Having compulsory meeting times in which social issues such as drinking and driving are addressed can help increase awareness among school age children and better prepare them for responsible decision making in college. Additionally, a student petition by students at the University of Texas-Austin would aid in alerting school officials of the need for greater education in middle and high school age children, in preparation for college and its increased liberties.
134. Save GU in Florence
This is a petition to fight the Gonzaga University administration in the untimely and unauthoritated removal of Fr. Bruno and Fr. Via from the Gonzaga-in-Florence administration.
135. Add Dr. Russell to our Blue Cross Blue Shield Network!
This petition's goal is to add Eric G. Russell, DC, to the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Network allowing the residents of Commerce, TX the right to choose Dr. Russell for their Chiropractic care.
This peition is directed to Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas. Its goal is to add Eric G. Russell, DC, to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Network, allowing the citizens of Commerce, Texas the right to choose Dr. Russell for their Chiropractic care. Dr. Eric Russell is the husband of Dr. Yvonne Villanueva-Russell, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University-Commerce, and has opened a Chiropractic office, Beacon Chiropractic in Commerce, Texas. Dr. Russell has appealed the decision denying him inclusion as a participating provider within the Blue Cross/Blue Shield network since the recommended number of Chiropractors within a 75 mile driving radius of Commerce has been met. It is my desire as a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas policy holder (Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce ISD and Zurn/Quest employees) to add Dr. Russell to the in-network provider list so that I may have freedom of choice concerning my healthcare providers.
136. Students against the George Washington University (GW) Increasing Tuition
"[Is there] going to be a raise? Do lions eat meat?" Stephen Joel Trachtenberg
Petition against The George Washington University (GW) increasing tuition.
It's time to take a stand. On February 24, 2003, the GW Hatchet announced a tuition increase will be voted on by the Board of Trustees this Friday. This comes on the heels of last year's 4.9% rise in tuition. The administration's nonchalant attitude towards tuition hikes is unacceptable. However, until we, the students of GW, make our displeasure known this is the kind of treatment we can expect. Join a mass assembly of students as we make a public demonstration of our opposition to the economical burdens being put on us by the administration's lack of fiscal prudence. We ask the administration to re-examine a budget which includes multiple costly expansionist projects and extravagant spending on programs like Colonial Inauguration (CI) and Parent's Weekend before they choose to further increase our tuition.
On Wednesday, February 26, 2003, we will protest in Kogan Plaza and J Street. Please participate and take a stand by signing this petition.
137. Inclusion of credit for Creative Writing courses as requirements for English major
This petition serves to implore you to please consider including Creative Writing courses offered in the English department here at Washington and Lee University as requirements for students wishing to major in English.
As it stands, it is simply unfair to students who wish to concentrate in this area within the major and not be able to have the credit fulfill a requirement for the major. Learning to write well is an important feature of a Washington and Lee education and a special emphasis in the English Department, where all courses involve instruction in writing. While students at Washington and Lee cannot major in writing, it would be appreciated if they could receive credit towards the major for all Creative Writing courses taken and passed at this university.
Some basic research has been undertaken regarding Washington and Lee's peer institutions and it was found that following schools not only offer credit for Creative Writing courses, but also count that credit as requirements for the major:
Vassar College, Smith College, Grinnell College, Wesleyan University, Haverford College, Davidson College, Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, Carleton College
Amherst College
In fact, Middlebury College offers "over twenty different courses a year on various aspects of creative writing: fiction, poetry, playwrighting, screenwriting, and nonfiction." And all courses & credit are counted towards the English major.
Further, "Creative writing is a valued part of the curriculum at Bowdoin."
If these highly selective, well-respected colleges accept credit for the major, why does Washington and Lee not? We, the undersigned, implore you to please reconsider your stand in this regard and to overturn the decision reached by your committee.
138. Greg Kohls should be a starter
We want Greg Kohls, the suppoed "program guy" to start for the men's varsity basketball team at the University of Dayton.
139. Bring Back Fall Break at Liberty University!
Last semester, Liberty University took out Fall Break and added it on to Thanksgiving. As a result, students must now go three months without any kind of break in the routine. We are feeling burned out and unable to do the work we would normally be capable of. Thanksgiving is only a month away from Christmas and we would normally have four days. That's not much time to see a family, but they can make up for it at Christmastime. We need to bring Fall Break back so we can get some rest and refreshment. Liberty tortures us enough already; why should it also extend to this?
140. Save University High School's Trees!
The Los Angeles Unified School District wants to demolish important trees on the University High School campus, and the Undersigned urge them to consider other alternatives.
141. Open the RATT at Niagara University Campus
The RATT used to be a great bar on the Niagara University Campus. Now it is rarely used except for sporadic functions that usually do not involve the students. Why not open the RATT once again and have a bar on our campus that can truley be our own.
142. UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON MAIN CAMPUS PARKING SOLUTION
AS YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CONSIDER THE PARKING ISSUES THAT U OF H MAIN CAMPUS HAS BEEN DEALING WITH FOR SOME TIME NOW. WITH THIS PETITION, YOU CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. EACH YEAR WE STUDENTS PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR PARKING THAT IS LACKING AT TIMES TO SAY THE LEAST. IT SEEMS THAT WE ALMOST HAVE TO GET TO CAMPUS AT 6:30 OR 7 AM TO EVEN HAVE A CHANCE AT AN AVAILABLE SPOT. OUR MONEY SHOULD BE GOING TOWARDS CREATING MORE PARKING FOR THE STUDENTS. EACH DAY WE ALL LEAVE WORK OR OUR HOMES ABOUT 30 TO 45 MINUTES BEFORE WE SHOULD DUE TO THIS PARKING PROBLEM. THIS IS REDICULOUS! IF YOU LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE, WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SACRIFICE TIME THAT COULD BE SPENT WORKING, STUDYING, OR WITH OUR FAMILIES. SIGNING THIS PETITION GETS US ON OUR WAY TO BEING IN CLASS ON TIME AND BEING ABLE TO SPEND FAR LESS TIME IN OUR CARS; BECAUSE AS WE ALL KNOW OUR TIME IS VERY VALUABLE.
143. Da An/Blowing in the Wind should be supported
Calling all patrons, past and present, of Da An/Blowing in the Wind in Nanjing, People's Republic of China.
Nanjing University intends to redevelop the area in which Da An is located as part of their expansion plan. This means that Da An will be no more! Please sign this petition to help us make it known to the University, the cultural and social significance of Da An in Nanjing, in hope that they may allow Da An to remain or provide a suitable alternative space for the bar in their plans.
We are organising a Da An music night 'Zui Zhong Yao de Shi Wanr!' for June 29th, inviting all artists who have previously played in Da An to perform in support of this cause. Please come along!
This electronic petition will support our local paper-petition and will be submitted with as many photographs as we can get of good times in Da An. If you have a photograph of yourself in Da An and wish to submit it, please attach it to an email and send to:
Laodong55@yahoo.co.uk - or post them to Shanghai Road, No. 13 Jinyin Street, Nanjing, PRC, 210000
Please help us spread the word to all those who have been to Nanjing and Da An.
144. Support Implementation of AB 540 at the University of California (UC)
AB 540 is a bill that was signed in October 2001 by Governor Gray Davis, which allows undocumented students to receive in-state tuition in California State Universities and Community Colleges. Students need to meet the following criteria:
1)Students must have attended a California High School for at least three (3) years;
2)Student must have graduated from a California High School;
3)Students must submit an affidavit stating that they have filed, or will file, for legal residency status to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
In the original bill presented to Governor Gray Davis, there was a clause that stated that students meeting the specified criteria would also be able to receive federal and state financial aid. However, in order for the Governor to approve the bill, this clause was removed.
It has already been acknowledged by the U.S. Supreme Court that undocumented students are likely to remain in the U.S. and contribute to the economy and society (Plyler vs. Doe). The adversity these students have had to overcome and their diverse backgrounds offer richness and depth to the quality of the educational experience at the UC system, so why shouldn't undocumented students have access to institutions of higher education such as UCLA? Failure to apply AB 540 at the UC, would contradict the basic belief that education is a human right.
Currently, the bill does not apply to the University of California system. In order for AB 540 to be implemented at the University of California level, the UC Regents (the governing board of the University of California) need to vote YES during the January 16-17, 2002 UC Regents Meeting at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
145. End maternal deprivation experiments on primates @ SUNY
This current campaign is seeking to end more than three decades of cruel and unnecessary primate research at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Leonard Rosenblum, director of the Primate Behavior Laboratory at the SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, has forced monkeys to undergo maternal separation or deprivation in order to "model" human ailments such as panic and anxiety disorders. Mr. Rosenblum has been performing his sadistic experiments at SUNY on mother monkeys and their infants for over 30 years.
Picture this: a young monkey sits terrified and immobile with its head below his knees. His arms are wrapped around himself and its toes are tightly curled. This is the essence of Rosenblum's experiments Deprived of their mothers, these normally playful infants become frightened and withdrawn. Since 1990 he has funded his brutal research with over 2.5 million dollars in taxpayer money. LET'S STOP HIM NOW.
146. South Asian Studies at UCLA
What must a region do to earn academic standing at a university? The region of South Asia, rich in history and culture and complicated in its development, is home to one out of every six people on the globe. Students at the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) were thus stunned to find that there was no academic avenue to pursue a degree in the subject; not as a minor, a major, nor as graduate studies. They were furthermore dispirited by the absence of a South Asian Studies Center at UCLA, to coordinate the exchange of ideas between faculty and students.
As the South Asian Studies Task Force we turn to you, our friends in the community, for assistance. Your signature on this petition will show evidence for the demand for such a program at UCLA and at other universities across the nation. Your signature will also reflect the greater pursuit of ethnic studies for various groups. At the largest level, each signature will show support for student access to education.
We are confidant that our efforts can guide and support other groups as they pursue similar goals. Thus, a signature would help not only present and future UCLA students, but also any student wanting to make his/her voice heard in the educational process.
Thank you for your support and we welcome your comments.
Sincerely,
South Asian Studies Task Force

147. Legalization of Melatonin to be Sold as a Vitamin in Canada
Recent studies suggest that supplementing melatonin may bolster our immune systems, keep our cells from disintegrating, slow the growth of tumors and cataracts, and ward off heart disease, all the while helping us sleep better. (Newsweek, August 1995)
"Studies suggest that low-dose supplements of melatonin can hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills." Melatonin may have many other uses and has been reported to make people feel better, strengthen the immune system, and reduce free radicals in the body. Current research is underway to determine melatonin's effect as an anti-oxidant, immno-modulator in cancer, delayed sleep-phase disorders, and jet lag. Tests are still under way so there is much to still be learned about melatonin and its effects on the human body." (Newsweek, November 6, 1995, p. 60-63).
Melatonin secretion is involved in physiologic sleep onset, and melatonin may be useful in treating insomnia. (Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, May 1995, Harvard, Cambridge, & MIT) Low melatonin levels correlate with low sleep quality. Seven days treatment with melatonin at a level of 2 mg. daily can improve sleep patterns in elderly patients with insomnia. (Dr. Haimov, British Medical Journal, 1994) Young adult subjects assess their sleep as "deeper" after melatonin treatment. (Dr. Nave, European Journal of Pharmacology, 1995)
We produce melatonin abundantly until puberty, and then it declines steadily into old age. (Dr. Russell Reiter, University of Texas) Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland, which is a small gland in the center of the brain. As darkness fall, the pineal gland produces a surge of melatonin that goes to all parts of the body. When light hits the retina of the eye, neural impulses signal the pineal gland to slow melatonin production.
Melatonin has been found to inhibit LDL [low density lipids or "bad cholesterol"] and the synthesis of cholesterol. (Dr. Muller, Biochemical and Biophysical Research, 1994)
Melatonin selectively and efficiently detoxifies highly reactive oxidants [free radicals] by donating an electron to electrophilic compounds. (Dr. Poeggeler, Annals of New York Academy of Sciences, 1995) This may explain why breast cancer and prostate cancer patients taking melatonin had greater survival rates. (Dr. Massion, University of Massachusetts, Medical Hypotheses, 1995) Mice treated with melatonin showed a 50 percent reduction in tumor weight when compared to control mice. (Dr. Berkowitz, Journal of Urology, 1988)
Melatonin helps alleviate the symptoms associated with "Winter Depression". (Dr. Tukholmankatu, Medical Hypothesis, 1994)
Blood pressure normalization is enhanced with melatonin, and it also modulates the release of heart killing stress hormones.
According to many, one of the more effective means of taking a supplement such as melatonin is the sublingual (under the tongue) method. A high quality sublingual melatonin supplement will usually contain 2.5 mg. of melatonin (often in a base of sorbitol and a natural flavor such as peppermint). One tablet can be dissolved under the tongue before retiring. Since this tablet can be dissolved under the tongue, it is excellent for children with sleep disorders and hyperactivity.
148. Syracuse University: Don't Abandon the Boy Scouts
There was little debate, no dissension and no vote when Syracuse University Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw consulted his board of trustees executive committee April 6 about barring the Hiawatha-Seaway Council of the Boy Scouts of America from using the Carrier Dome for its annual Boypower Dinner.
The Scouts had used the Dome and the university's catering service for 17 of the past 18 years, raising as much as $500,000, before Shaw decided that the Boy Scout policy excluding openly homosexual adult leaders was at odds with the University's mission.
However, in June 2000, the United States supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts, a private organization, were within their constitutional rights to bar homosexuals as scoutmasters. Syracuse University is penalizing the Boy Scouts of America because the almost-century old organization both refuses to nullify its pledge to be "morally straight" and will not abandon its central mission to teach young boys what George A. Davidson, a lawyer for the organization, described to the Supreme Court as "true manliness" - a man's responsibility in marriage and fatherhood.
149. Don't ban student mock adjusting
Macquarie University currently has one of the world's best chiropractic courses. Our graduates are renowned world wide for their skilled level of adjusting. This could all come to an end. The university is "attempting" to put a ban on thrusting in skills class as of 2001. This would mean that there is to be "NO THRUSTING BY STUDENTS ON ANY OTHER STUDENTS". This has come about because some students have been injured while practising their skills and are now suing the Department. If the "No Thrusting" rule is introduced it would be a disaster for the course and the reputation of chiropractic in Australia. It is imperative that students develop their psychomotor skills and experience what patients experience by actually performing the adjustments (out of lock-up) on their peer students. Not on the unrealistic mannequins the Uni is trying to replace students' bodies with. All this rule will do is promote unsupervised underground adjusting by students and cause more injuries. The potential risk to the public at the outpatient's clinics from the implementation of this rule is completely unacceptable. Students should be made fully aware of the risks, and made to sign a disclaimer from the first day they enter the course and again at the beginning of each year. Don't let the University take the easy way out. Explain the issue to your family and friends, get on the net and tell other chiropractors and student through out the world what is happening. We need lots people to sign this petition for the University to reverse its decision.
150. StevieStar and Mish Doggs Singlets up for Retirement
StevieStar (no.7) and Mish (no.15), of the Macquarie University Basketball team have been some of the most influential characters over the past five years. They have brought back tradition and pride to the university that was starting to lack.
In Perth in 1999, they gave birth to Delores the Dolphin, which is now the Macquarie University intervarsity mascot and an icon throughout the University's of Australia.
They have brought back spirit and pride back to Macquarie University. Both Stevie and Mish are well known and respected throughout the university by both students and staff members.
In signing the petition you will help to provide the university with a historic tradition.
