1. Death Penalty for Terrorists in Israel

Gilad Shalit (Hebrew: גלעד שליט‎, born 28 August 1986) is an Israeli-French citizen and IDF soldier. On 25 June 2006, he was abducted by Hamas militants from inside Israel near the border with Gaza in a cross-border raid via underground tunnels, and held in isolation without medical care or Red Cross visits for over five years until he was released on 18 October 2011, in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian convicted prisoners, including hundreds convicted of multiple murders and carrying out terror attacks against Israeli civilians. (Wikipedia)

Terrorist included in the exchange are planners of some of worst bombings Israel has seen such as the Netanya Passover bombing and the Subboro Pizza bombing.

The release of convicted terrorists for the exchange of a kidnapped victim presents at least five grave concerns: a) It causes unbearable pain for the families of the victims, b) It inflates of the price tag for innocent captives c) It serves as an incentive for further kidnappings d) It lessens the deterrent against committing acts of terror, and e) The freed terrorists present a grave danger to the public.

Nevertheless, the plight of a young innocent captive under unspeakable conditions leaves the public and the government with the feeling that it has no choice but to give into terrorist demands. It’s a no win situation.

Killings, bombing, and terror in Norway, Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia, Chechnya, Latin America, Spain, Japan, as well as government-sponsored terrorism in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and some other parts of the world should be enough to tell the whole humanity that something should be done.

Terrorism (especially government-sponsored terrorism) and Extremism are on the rise. It is high time we took action against terror, oppression, instability, and brutality.

4. Petition to Cease Funding Pakistan's "Counterterrorism" Effort

The United States has continued to funnel billions of dollars to the Pakistani armed forces in sophisticated weapons and cash – most recently a $3.4 billion package announced in October 2010 under the State Department’s Foreign Military Finance Program, and another $3 billion is scheduled to go to Pakistan this year.

Bin Laden's discovery in a wealthy suburb of Abbottabad raises more than a few questions over US military funding to Pakistan.

After years of former Pakistani military dictator General Musharraf assuring the world that bin Laden was either dead or in Afghanistan, he was found and dispatched by US special forces in the town of Abbottabad, a mere 30 miles – 50km – as the crow flies from the capital Islamabad.

By 2008, the United States political and military leadership had lost all remnants of faith in the trustworthiness of the Pakistani military and its intelligence wing, the ISI, internally acknowledging that it consistently "hunted with the hounds and ran with the hares", including the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqanis, and the Lashkar-e-Taiba – and was involved in planning terrorist attacks from Kabul to Mumbai.

5. A Petition to Avoid an American Quagmire in Libya

The United States cannot afford a deepening quagmire in Libya. We call on President Obama to seek authorization from the U.S. Congress for his Libyan bombing campaign, including a mission statement limited to protecting Libyan civilians, a viable diplomatic strategy, an exact cost projection, and a timeline for the rapid withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops before the war becomes another quagmire.

On Behalf of the People of the United States of America, the undersigned Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth and affiliates hereby petition for, and demand, a truly independent investigation with subpoena power in order to uncover the full truth surrounding the events of 9/11/01 – specifically the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers and Building 7.

We believe there is sufficient doubt about the official story to justify re-opening the 9/11 investigation. The new investigation must include a full inquiry into the possible use of explosives that might have been the actual cause of the destruction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers and Building 7.

9. A Petition Against Four More Years of War

We object to the United States proposal for Afghanistan being presented this week to NATO ministers.

It is not a peace plan. It is a plan for four more years of combat by US and NATO forces.

It is not a plan for US or Western troop withdrawals but for further occupation. It is a proposal to gradually lessen Western casualties and lessen Western visibility while transitioning to Western-financed, Western-armed, and Western-advised Afghan army combat in a civil conflict. It is a plan for long-term Western military bases.

It is not a plan to stop al Qaeda or terrorists from attacking Western targets. There are virtually no al Qaeda left in Afghanistan. The most recent terrorist attacks on America have been inspired by our deepening wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In seeking to save our military reputation, we all but assure future threats against Western targets. CIA officials even describe Yemen’s al Qaeda cell as more dangerous than al Qaeda in Pakistan. [NYT, Oct. 18, 2010]

It pre-empts the Administration’s own proposal for a full “review” of Afghan policy in December. The timing instead is aimed at shoring up a faltering Western alliance.

The central proposal--to increase the scale of the Afghan army and police in order to prop up a corrupt Kabul regime--will never work without a parallel cease-fire, deep institutional reform, enforceable human rights, and peace-keeping arrangements with leadership by neutral countries.

The current expenditure of over $100 billion American dollars per year for Afghanistan could be spent on medical care for 15 million veterans, or 15 million college scholarships, or 1.8 million new teachers, or 72 million installations of renewable energy for American homes.

11. Endorsments supporting No deportation of the Figueroa Family

On May 5th 2010 IRB (Immigration and Refugee Board) of Canada issued a deportation order against Jose Figueroa, a father of 3 canadian born children who has lived in Canada since May 1997.

The deportation order is based on a Section 34.(1) of the IRPA which states a broad definition of terrorism and membership. This definition of terrorism has been arbitrarily applied to FMLN, the current democratically elected goverment of El Salvador with which the Canadian Government mantains diplomatic relationships.

This seems to be a clerical error made by CBSA officers who have not considered important factors from the Salvadoran reality. If this is clerical error then it should be an easy fix tending to minimize the hardship that the Figueroa family has endure for the last 13 years.

16. Please do not scrap our Human Rights Act

Dear David Cameron,

Further to your election as our Prime Minister and your invitation to the British public to offer our energy, ideas and passion, we have put our names down on this petition to show our support for the Human Rights Act. We sincerely hope you will take note of this petition and understand that we have considered the Conservatives' reasons for replacing the Act with a Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. In light of all the arguments and evidence, we strongly believe that the Human Rights Act is one of the most precious and important pieces of UK legislation and we feel passionate about protecting it. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that it was instigated by the great Conservative Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

This is not a political stance specific petition; we voted for a range of parties in the recent election, however we are appealing to you, as you negotiate our country's future, to assure us that you will not repeal this Act.

Our reasons for this are as follows:

1) Human rights are important words to us and human rights law is vital. It has evolved over many years to protect citizens from their state and to allow everybody to enjoy rights that they deserve, simply by their nature of being human. The Human Rights Act is simple and gives every person in the UK the following rights:

1) the right to life
2) freedom from torture and degrading treatment
3) freedom from slavery and forced labour
4) the right to liberty
5) the right to a fair trial
6) the right not to be punished for something that wasn't a crime when you did it
7) the right to respect for private and family life
8) freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and freedom to express your beliefs
9) freedom of expression
10) freedom of assembly and association
11) the right to marry and to start a family
12) the right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights and freedoms
13) the right to peaceful enjoyment of your property
14) the right to an education
15) the right to participate in free elections
16) the right not to be subjected to the death penalty

There are absolutely no articles in the Act that we, as members of the public, would not want to be fully protected by. We can see no reason for taking any of these rights away.

2) The Human Rights Act has been hugely misunderstood and misinterpreted. Many of the more ‘ridiculous’ law suits brought under the name of the act have been dismissed. It does not allow criminals to get whatever they want, in fact it actually makes it a legal requirement that the public is protected from dangers to society. Just one example of the benefits of the act is its use in keeping an elderly married couple in long-term care together. Although in an ideal world this should have been avoided by common sense or compassion, the fact is that law is clearly needed to prevent unpleasant situation like this occurring. Secondly, the Act does not, as it sometimes suggested, mean that threats to our nation’s security cannot be dealt with. The Act requires courts to balance public safety against individual rights and, if necessary, a person at risk of harming our country can certainly have their liberty deprived.

3) Far from, as the Conservatives have suggested, the Human Rights Act devaluing the words ‘human rights’, the Act actually strengthens them. The Conservatives have shown a great deal of interest in foreign policy and human rights abroad, but if we do not respect human rights at home we do not set a good example. For example, Guantanamo Bay has severely damaged the reputation of the USA. The USA put a lot of pressure on in the international community to respect human rights, yet did not themselves. This has tainted the concept of human rights negatively and has given countries who abuse human rights leverage to argue against changing their abusive practice. The UK should be an excellent example to the international community of a country that has the utmost respect for human rights. Removing the words ‘human rights’ from our laws would be a terrible signal of our lack of promotion of the concept within our own borders.

4) We welcome the promotion of more responsibility within society and are happy to lend a great deal of support to making this ideal a reality. The Human Rights Act is not the place for this however. There are many pieces of law that outline out responsibilities towards each other; the Act is the place to outline the state’s responsibilities towards us. It is therefore illogical to replace the Human Rights Act with a Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.

5) The Conservatives are unhappy with judges having power to advise Parliament, as the Act has allowed. We contest the idea that judges should not have a say in politics. They are exceptionally bright, informed members of society who would have had to demonstrate nuanced understanding and careful, responsible judgement before gaining such a position of authority. They will have a niche understanding of human rights that politicians cannot have because of the breadth of their mandates, and it is not wrong that they should not be consulted for their opinions. We note that, contrary to popular understanding, the Act does not give judges power to decide laws; MPs always have the last say on the laws Parliament produces.

6) It concerns us that a piece of legislation should only be designed to protect the British. For example, the issues of migration and asylum seeking have become confused, and there is often a lack of understanding that asylum seekers, who have suffered unimaginably and may face torture or even murder if they return to the country of origin, are different to economic migrants. We do not want our country to remove the piece of law that guarantees minorities such as asylum seekers the dignity they desperately deserve.

7) The Human Rights Act has not been imposed by Europe. The European Convention of Human Rights (upon which the Human Rights Act is based) was designed by European countries after World War II and has nothing to do with the EU. The Human Rights Act therefore actually allows human rights issues to be dealt with domestically rather than going all the way to courts in Strasbourg.

17. Inform the Canadian Public Regarding the Shortcomings of Adopting an “Islamic Ideological Detox” Program

On Wed June 3rd, 2009, the Toronto Star published an article entitled “’Detox’ Takes Care of Radicals” by Isabel Teotonio.

The article was a brief exposition of the new “ideological detox” program created by Toronto’s Sheikh Ahmed Amiruddin of the Al Sunnah Institute. This program was designed to “heal Muslim youth who are showing signs of extremist behavior”. Composed of twelve steps, “ideological detox” is supposed to help Muslim youth steer away from a path of “Islamic extremism”. As a program that purports to utilize theological clarity and positive spirituality, Amiruddin’s “ideological detox” assumes that “Islamic extremism” is a spiritual illness that stems from theological and psychological misguidance.

Unfortunately, Teotonio’s article does not deal with two important blind-spots of this proposed “ideological detox” program:

(1) As numerous academics have studied, noted, and concluded (Robert Pape of the University of Chicago chief among them, see: Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism; NY: Random House Inc, 2006), “religious/ideological extremism”, or the resorting to violence by certain individuals, is a specific product stemming from the frustrations caused primarily by political upheavals. The chaotic suffering induced by military occupations and wars are chiefly responsible for the recruitment of individuals into organizations such as, say, al-Qaeda. The article does not note this well-established argument.

(2) This proposed program would work by having concerned individuals “red-flag” those within their community that exhibit “signs of extremism”. This procedure refers to an extremely vague methodology of identifying danger. Effectively, individuals will be “red-flagged” not for their deeds, but for expressing their thoughts. One can easily see how such a suggestion may prove intrusive upon the rights to free speech and expression that are so sacred to Canadian democracy. It is in fact an explicit replica of the Red Scare days of the 1950s, where McCarthyism indicted those who “appeared to exhibit signs of supporting communists”. Teotonio’s article does not probe critically into the implications of Amiruddin’s program. If picked up as a governing policy of sorts, this program can evolve into a damaging element within our democracy. The Canadian intelligence service CSIS has already shown interest in such a program, also espoused by Toronto-based Sheikh Mohammed Shaikh, and his respective organizations.

As one of Canada’s leading newspapers, the Toronto Star is responsible for informing the Canadian public on pertinent issues that may affect the well-being of our national security and democracy. In order to successfully excel in its responsibility as a vital cornerstone of Canadian democracy, the Toronto Star should consider critically probing the idea of endorsing a program of “ideological detox”.

20. Sri Lanka - Help Eradicate terrorism

A Democratically elected government with a mandate to eradicate terrorism is fighting terrorism with the LTTE, a terrorist outfit in Sri Lanka with links to Al-Qaeda.

Due to misinformation spread by the LTTE and its sympathisers, the US is calling for further ceasefires in order to minimize further civilian casualties. The history has shown that such ceasefires have not produced tangible results as LTTE is holding civilians as human shields against their will. Those who resisted the LTTE have been either beaten or killed.

Also, there is a push to save the leaders of the LTTE, one of the most brutal terrorist orgnaisations in the world, who masterminded and executed killings of prominent political leaders such as Rajiv Ghandi, the 7th Prime Minister of India.

We, a group of peace loving Sri Lankans earnestly request the US and the international community to provide support to the Sri Lankan government to eradicate terrorism out of Sri Lanka and the world and not to help negotiate escape routes for such terrorists. For, terrorism has to be completely and comprehensively eradicated.

21. FOSWAL Indo-Pak Peace Campaign

The recent tragic incidents of unprecedented horror in Bombay have pushed all of us in the creative fraternity, particularly the sensitive fiction writers and poets, artists and academics, social philosophers and peace activists and journalists of both Pakistan and India, in deep depression.

We honestly feel that when the river is in flood, and the winds are howling, blowing in the opposite direction, that is the time for creative and sensitive people to hold hands and swim against the current.

We agree that mutual relations among the SAARC neighbours are better than what they were twenty one years back when we launched our efforts for peace way back in 1987. We feel all of us the creative fraternity of the neighbouring countries, should put in more effort, be more genuinely aware of the turbulences, and should own our responsibility to have serious deliberations about the issues of fundamentalism and terrorism, and recognize the evil design of forces which manufacture terrorism.

We at Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL) are keen to engage voices of reason and sanity in both countries to take the debate about inclusiveness of democracy to the marginalized sections of society, and raise a joint voice for peace, compassion, and good-neighbourly relations which can be genuinely relevant in building a joint voice for peace, ringing out a loud and clear message that we need peace and not war, we need ‘roti’ and not the bombs !

On August 17th 2007, around 150 people went to Herdade da Lameira, near Silves, in the GM Free Region of the Algarve, in Portugal, to make a protest against the cultivation of GMO (genetically modified organisms). During the symbolic action 1 hectare was mowed.

The Algarve was the first region in Portugal to be declared a GMO-Free Zone by the local authorities. This property, the first in the region which cultivated GM corn of the variety MON810, violated the declaration and disrespected the will of the citizens.

The activists publicly offered to recultivate the 51 hectares of transgenic corn with organic corn. The proposal was rejected by the owner, which continues to use GM corn, also in this year.

In the days following the action, the wide media attention MVE received instigated a large polemic, resonating into layers of the general public, the environmental movement itself, academics and even the government. Never did any environmental action achieve so much attention in the recent history of Portugal. The initial media highlights were not so much on the subject of the action, the presence of GMO in Portugal, but rather on the spectacular nature and the illegal aspect of it. However in a second phase attention shifted as well to the debate on GMO, and its dangers. For that reason alone, the action of MVE was considered by many people with environmental concerns as a great success.

Because of that success, the current Portuguese government responsible for a policy in favour of GMO has responded strongly in an attempt to isolate the activists of MVE and other environmental organisations struggling against GMO, through a strategy of criminalization. This strategy came to the point of even labeling the action as a terrorist act (Europol EU Terrorism Situation and Trend Report 2008). Some people that have been brought in relation to the case by the police are therefore facing the risk of being prosecuted. In general, it became harder to act against GMO in Portugal. Individuals or organisations who attempt, run a high risk of being under suspicion and surveillance by authorities.

24. Raise Terrorism Awareness in the United States

Everyday, people around the world lose their lives in terrorist attacks and today, in the United States, it is easy to forget that our great nation is at war with the distractions the mainstream media produces. It is the duty of the United States government to raise awareness and educate its citizens on the subject of terrorism and the War in Iraq.

Increasing awareness of terrorism related subjects would help us prepare and react appropriately in case of a local attack as well as help us understand the principles behind terrorism and allow ourselves to make sensible, educated, and thoughtful opinions on international matters.

Suggestions include classes or extracurricular activities in high schools and colleges, public services, newscast, TV spots, and campaigning to raise awareness in California or nationwide.

Subjects include: Genocide awareness, education on terrorist groups, education on terrorist mentality and how it relates to religious, political, and social beliefs, further expanding education on 9/11 and the War in Iraq, preparation in case of a terrorist attack, course of action to take in case of terrorist attack, prevention of terrorist activity, and terrorism as it relates on a global scale.

The decision to fight the war on terrorism was indeed a correct one. However, too long have we focused on changing that which cannot be changed while ignoring that which can. The adults who partake in terrorism are too heavily influenced by constant indoctrination for us to be able to change their minds.

Instead of fighting a losing battle, we must focus on the future, the children of those war-torn regions by funneling only a small portion of the billions spent into building schools and recreational centers for the future.

30. European Council is not above the law

The Friends of a Free Iran parliamentary inter-group has accused the European Council of "open defiance of the European Courts" following the decision taken on 30th January 2007 at the Economic and Financial Affairs Council meeting, regarding the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI).

A spokesman for the inter-group described the decision as "A blatant violation of the ruling of the European Communities' Court of First Instance, of 12th December 2006." This petition is the right to defend the integrity "of defending freedom" which is a god given right to all human beings, without being baught by political appeasments.

We Ask all defenders of rights to join us in this case study, to prove that Law cannot be tempered by Politics. The petition is delivered by a member of the ISCC.
