Petition Tag - tax increase
1. Allow lllinois municipalities to make their own retirement benefit decisions for employees
The Problem?
The Illinois pension system is in jeopardy. If we continue to provide lavish, outdated pensions to newly-hired government employees, our state and local governments could be bankrupt in just a few years.
The Solution?
Give local government in Illinois an option that stops the flow of NEW EMPLOYEES into the current, broken pension system.
Allow Illinois municipalities to choose the retirement benefit they offer to new employees. They may provide new employees with the current pension system, or they may provide them with a 401(k)-style retirement plan.
2. Stop the Jersey City Tax Increase
In the waning days of your predecessors' administration, the City Council of Jersey City hastily proposed a budget that included a substantial tax increase (http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-9/1263453994245760.xml&coll=3).
Additionally, the Council on January 27, 2010 passed a resolution on a 5 - 3 vote to petition the State of New Jersey to allow the city to raise property taxes above the legal maximum of 4%; N.J.S.A. 40A:4-45.15a).
The city has not followed the example of other states and municipalities and adjusted its expenses to the revenues it can raise. In fact, the city has not made a concerted effort to reduce its overall expenses, with the exception of cosmetic cuts such as furloughs, closing 4 fire stations and reassigning personnel, and requesting department to reduce costs.
3. Stop Raising Smokers' Taxes!
Congress has singled out smokers for an unfair tax increase- and our representatives went along, voting to raise taxes on cigarettes $4.50 a carton.
That means more money for Washington- and less money in our wallet.
Your voice can make a difference. Tell our Congressmen to stop this tax increase while there is still time- because smokers are voters too!
4. No Tax Increase - 2006 Budget - for the Oley Valley School District
April 22, 2006
Since 1999, the Oley Valley School District property taxes have increased 67%.
Seniors on fixed incomes and young families cannot keep pace with these increases.
They are struggling to keep their homes.
The school district has nearly $5,000,000 in funds they could use for property tax relief in 2006.
The homeowners of the Oley Valley School District deserve a budget that does not increase their property taxes for the seventh consecutive year!
Keep our community strong.
