31. Say No to the British Government's Suspension of Our Constitution

On Monday March 16, 2009 His Excellency the Governor of the TCI released the Interim Report of Sir Robin Auld on corruption or other serious dishonesty in relation to past and present elected members of the TCI Legislature in recent years.

His Excellency the Governor made an official press release outlining the actions decided upon by HMG in light of the Interim Report.

Without consultation, the British Government has bypassed the people of the Turks & Caicos Islands and intends to take the following actions through Order in Council in the British House of Parliament on March 25, 2009:

1. PARTIALLY SUSPEND OUR CONSTITUTION FOR 2 YEARS INITIALLY. THIS PERIOD CAN BE EXTENDED OR SHORTENED.

2. SUSPEND THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY. WE WILL NO LONGER HAVE AN ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES TO LISTEN TO OUR CONCERNS AND ADDRESS THEM.

3. THE BRITISH TO RULE US DIRECTLY THROUGH THE GOVERNOR AND WHOEVER HE CHOOSES TO ASSIST HIM, WHOSE ADVICE HE IS NOT BOUND TO ACCEPT.

4. CRIMINAL TRIAL BY JUDGE ALONE. THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BE TRIED BY A JURY OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS WILL BE ELIMINATED.

5. ENLARGEMENT OF THE FRANCHISE. NON-BELONGERS WHO ARE RESIDENT IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS WILL BE ALLOWED TO VOTE IN OUR GENERAL ELECTIONS.

33. Stop closing schools for the landless and support MST and WSF

Stop closing schools for the landless and official attacks in Brazil against World Social Forum:

Authorities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil governed by politicians that have received support from the Finnish-Swedish transnational company Stora Enso are now closing schools for landless. The sudden decision to close all the schools that have been started in MST encampments has come after a growing conflict between Stora Enso and MST, a movement that defends biological diversity against the monoculture plantations promoted by the transnational cellulose corporation.

A representative of the same authorities that are now closing the schools have simultaneously attacked the World Social Forum (WSF) that started in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, and for many years have been held there. The WSF is widely respected in Brazil and globally as a strong inspiration for global democracy, including showing how the South can democratise the world.

The MST in Rio Grande do Sul was a pioneer twelve years ago in implementing a Brazilian law that supported schools in the countryside, and has become a model for the rest of the country. UNICEF Brazil have awarded the educational work which has developed due to MST as a model for education among children in vulnerable socio-economic conditions.

MST is not only struggling for implementing agrarian reform and education in the countryside but is also engaged in work of importance to the survival of the planet. The 1.5 million participants in the movement are aiming at ecological agriculture. This work of theirs is a direct threat to transnational companies who wish to make profit from gene-manipulated plants and monoculture plantations for the cellulose and agrofuel industries. One of the main opponents of MST is Stora Enso who has given financial support in the election to those political forces that are now trying to stop the landless movement.

We oppose this politics in the interest of Northern transnational corporations and the accusation that the WSF is an illegitimate, undemocratic force.

35. Stop the Protests near the Mexican-Texas border now!

The Mexican-Drug wars have been going on for 3 years. This has affected some of Mexico.

Mexican soldiers have been at the border since. And are trying to protect Mexico from illegal drug imports from the United States.

Protests are trying to make soldiers withdraw from the region. If they withdraw, then drug cartels will start attacking near-by towns and trying to overthrow the government.

Please, keep us safe from Drug Cartels! Keep the soldiers at the Border!

36. Defend the Human Rights Defenders

Colombia is suffering one of the worst humanitarian and human rights crises in the world, finding its clearest expression in the continuation of the world’s second worst internal displacement crisis (after Sudan).

Colombians are forced to flee by armed groups seeking to establish territorial and economic control, or are simply caught up in the violence. Between 3 and 4 million people have fled their homes in the past two decades and Colombians make up the third largest refugee population in the world. In 2008 there was a sharp increase in forced displacement. Those who have been displaced are very unlikely to see any significant compensation, let alone the return of their lands.

Civil society organisations, trade unionists and journalists seeking to expose crimes and human rights violations, or calling for different development policies, do so at the risk of violence or death at the hands of the police, the army, the guerrilla, or a new generation of paramilitary groups. Though there have been some advances in high profile cases following international pressure, impunity for these crimes remain the norm in Colombia. The only sustainable way to reduce levels of threats and violence is to bring the perpetrators to justice.

One of the most troubling aspects of the Colombian human rights crisis is the premeditated murder by soldiers of young people or community leaders outside combat (extrajudicial executions). Another is the stigmatisation campaign against human rights defenders being carried out by government representatives.

38. STOP largest polluter of the Netherlands, the one in Curaçao

Curaçao’s refinery, Refineria Isla (Curaçao) BV, is the largest polluter of the Netherlands, the largest single polluter in Curaçao and probably the largest polluter in the European Community (EC).

The Netherlands and Curaçao governments turn a blind eye to the plea of 25,000 locals, who live under the worst circumstances, all this just to please PDVSA, Venezuela’s state refinery that operates this outdated oil factory. (1915).

They have a binding contract with the Curaçao government till 2019 unfortunately. This is the reason why MSi asks not to extend the contract beyond this date and to close the refinery at the end of the present contract period. Please take this decision NOW! This year! Don’t wait any longer. Not extending the contract and guaranteeing the closing in 2019 is a clear sign to developers. It will reduce our double digit unemployment immediately.

Meanwhile instruct and order PDVSA to operate according to our environmental laws. Check control and start measuring the emissions of CO2 output and if PDVSA can’t operate clean, levy heavy fines and close them down till they have cleaned up their act.

If PDVSA threatens to leave, let them leave. The waterfront property can be used for better and cleaner industry, generate 25 times more income than PDVSA is paying us now.

Curaçao receives no major benefits from the refinery. Get no riches. The population doesn’t even get quality products. PDVSA supplies the worst diesel. PDVSA pays a pittance in rent. (About 3.4 dollar cent/square feet/month).

The refinery once employed over 12,000 workers. Today less than thousand people find work in the refinery. Another 600 are employed by supply companies and contractors.

Pollution is deadly. A game only a few powerful people and handful corrupt officials play to fill their pockets. It benefits them, it benefits PDVSA, it benefits Venezuela, while our people in Curaçao starve and have to live with all kind of pollution related illnesses.

18 people die prematurely every year! 25,000 people live under the worst circumstances. High ranked Curaçao politicians are employed and paid by PDVSA.

Please give serious attention to the failure of our national refinery and our own government to comply with our environmental laws. Our government also fails to regulate and control the refinery. Refineria Isla has been demanded in court three times to clean up their act, but pollution continues to foul the air and threatens the health of neighborhoods west of the refinery. This has been going on for more than 20 years.

Fence communities like Habaai, Wishi, Marchena, Veeris and Buena Vista are home to many of our most neglected people. Our largest nursing home for the elderly is situated right under the smoke of the refinery. 6000 school children and teachers go to school under polluted smoke and gasses and have to endure foul smells to attend classes. Only when black clouds shoot excessive soot in the air, are these schools ordered to close.

People take great pride in the humble little homes they have built over the years with hard earned money. They can’t move. Children can’t go to other schools and the elderly have no choice. They are trapped and don't even know it. Nobody told them.

It is these communities that ask that the refining industry stop polluting the air immediately and stop releasing deadly gasses into the air. They ask YOUR help. PLEASE listen to them and act, even if it is far away from your home.

Thanks,
MSi (Fundashon Movementu Solushon Isla)

53. Save the Red Cross Hospital In Jatari Campesino, Ecuador

In years past the Spanish Red Cross conducted a project in which they constructed a hospital in the small, rural village of Jatari Campesino, Ecuador.

Due to the economic state of Jatari Campesino they have not been able to continue to fund and upkeep the hospital on their own and it now stands as an empty storage space.

The people have to travel an hour away to get any medical attention, though the service is not satisfactory due to the overwhelming racism towards the aboriginals living in rural Ecuador.

This is also what has prevented the citizens from asking for help on their own.

54. Free the Cuban Five!

A STORY OF BRAVERY AND LOVE OF COUNTRY

Cuba has faced the wrath of US aggression since the victory of the Cuban revolution in 1959. The numerous sabotage and attacks by terrorist groups based in Florida which act with total impunity have left 3,478 dead, 2,099 wounded. and direct damage to the economic and social objectives of Cuba amounting to 54 billion dollars. The damage to the economy of Cuba caused by the US economic blockade on the other hand exceeds 86, 208 million dollars, or an annual average of 1,832 million dollars.

Among these terrorists is the internationally known Luis Posada Carriles believed to be behind the blowing up of the civilian plane Cubana de Aviacion on October 6, 1976 which killed 73 persons and other heinous crimes including attempts to assassinate President Fidel Castro. His accomplice, Orlando Bosch, a confessed terrorist, walks freely on the streets of Miami thanks to the presidential pardon of Bush Senior.

Five Cuban heroes responded to the call to defend their country against these terrorist attacks. Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, Ramón Labañino Salazar, Fernando González Llort and René González Sehwerert monitored the anti-Cuban groups in Florida and kept Cuba informed of their terrorist plans.

In 1998, the Cuban government warned the US government of terrorist actions being organized in Florida against Cuba. It also demanded their collaboration to stop these terrorist acts. This was supported by a voluminous dossier which Cuba delivered to the FBI in June 1998.

Instead of acting on the concrete evidence presented the US government arrested the 5 Cubans on September 12, 1998. The 5 Cubans were monitoring the anti-terrorist attacks on Cuba and reporting to the Cuban government. The arrest and conduct of legal process ignored the basic principles of justice in violation of the United States’ own laws and international law. They were kept for 17 months in solitary confinement before trial; denied of change of venue despite existing prejudice against the five in the community and hostile local press; denial of their lawyers’ right to use the ‘defense of necessity’ that justified the presence of the five in the United States territory; finding of guilt of conspiracy to commit espionage without a shred of proof and despite contrary testimony offered by US generals and finding of guilt against Gerardo for conspiracy to commit murder even though the prosecutor admitted in writing he could not prove the charge.

On August 9, 2005, the three-judge panel of the Federal Court of Appeals in Atlanta decided unanimously to revoke the sentences of the Five and order a new trial. The judges stated “empanelling an [impartial] jury in this community was an unreasonable probability because of pervasive community prejudice.”

However, exactly a year later on August 9, 2006, the Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the decision of the 3-judge panel, rejecting the finding that an environment of violence and intimidation pervaded in Miami. The court ratified the sentences, denied a new trial and ordered that the case be sent back to the panel to consider remaining issues.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had declared on May 27, 2005, the prison sentences of the Five illegal. Amnesty International expressed its concerns to the US government for “the serious questions which have been raised about the fairness of the convictions” of the Five. Also, more than 900 parliamentarians from all over the world have declared their support for the Five by way of motions and letters to the US government asking for their liberation.

Despite the overwhelming clamor worldwide for justice and their freedom, the five are still incarcerated in the United States, confined in prisons of maximum security, denied of their right to receive regular visits even from family members; their telephone contacts and correspondence limited and controlled.

Indeed the people of the world were shocked and outraged to know that on May 8, 2007, international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles has been released in the United States and all charges against him were dropped, while the five Cuban heroes continue to languish in US prisons and their rights grossly violated. This aptly shows the double standards of the US in its “war on terrorism”.

Let us continue to struggle for justice and freedom of the Five Cuban patriots!

Thank you for your support.
