1. Pass the Horse Slaughter Protection Act
While the slaughterhouses in the United States have recently been closed, horses are still being slaughtered– they are merely being shipped across the border to Canada and Mexico, where they meet horrific ends.
In Mexico, for example, horses are repeatedly stabbed by “puntilla” knives until they bleed to death. These are not horses who are bred for meat, but horses who could have been a little girl’s best friend until purchased by a killer buyer at an auction.
In 2012, Obama signed an Appropriations Bill that would once again pave the way for slaughterhouses to operate in the United States again. Not withstanding the enormous environmental, legal and other concerns that a slaughterhouse brings to a town, the suffering of the horses who are sent to these plants is astronomical. They are sometimes put into trailers and left for days without water, then half-crazed, they are violently prodded into the slaughterhouse, where they are supposed to be killed by a captive bolt. Unfortunately, the horses are so scared that these bolts sometimes go into the horses’ eyes and the horse is struck again and again until stunned. It is not uncommon for a horse not to be killed by the captive bolt, but only stunned, so that they are actually alive while being vivisected.
Considering how horses are treated to the kill pens and how they are killed, here is no possible way that slaughter can ever be considered humane euthanasia.
2. Close the Red Lion Abattoir
The Red Lion Abattoir has slaughtered horses while they were not humanely killed.
Lou and Bill are two oxen that used to work on the college farm for ten years before Lou got injured and is now unable to work. Bill is unable to pull the plough on his own.
Although they now have other oxen as well, and an animal sanctuary has agreed to take them, the college are now planning on slaughtering these two oxen.
If this happens, their deaths may involve paralysis by bolt gun or electric tongs followed brutal killings involving cuts to their throats. Since the college plans on serving their meat on the site, they may end up as half-eaten meals thrown away in the college bins.
4. Stop the Cull of the Wild horses of Alberta
![]() |
| Wild Horses of Alberta Society |
TO: The Premier of Alberta, Honourable Alison Redford, The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resources, Diana McQueen, and the Minister of Tourism, Christina Cusanelli.
We, the undersigned residents of Alberta, draw the attention of the Premier of Alberta and the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resources to the following:
In the cull of 2012, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, issued licenses to allow 216 wild horses to be trapped and slaughtered. Sustainable Resources Development (SRD) now estimates only 778 free roaming horses remain on the Eastern Slopes of Alberta.
These horses have spent hundreds of years and generations, surviving very harsh conditions and predators. They are indeed – WILD!
Our wild horses are an integral part of Alberta’s heritage and culture and an integral part of the total ecosystem of Alberta's west country.
It is our hope that they will be recognized as a distinct heritage species with their own special status and protection, free of capture, harassment and abuse. At this point given the devastation of the prior year’s cull, the wild horse population needs time to recover.
What does Cull mean? Wikipedia describes the word cull as "the process of removing breeding animals from a group based on specific criteria". In the case of the Wild Horses of Alberta "For livestock and wildlife alike, culling usually implies the killing of the removed animals".
5. Stop the Disastrous Grey Seal Cull
A key study published in the science journal Nature ("Transient dynamics of an altered large marine ecosystem", September 2011"), by Canadian scientists using the DFO's own data, totally refutes Ashfield, the DFO and the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council. The latter insist on slaughtering 70,000 - 140,000 grey seals (using machine guns and incinerators), as they blame the grey seals for slowing the cod recovery. This slaughter would cost $35 million dollars when the DFO is already facing cutbacks.
Why is the government taking such a foolish action? Possibly to distract the East coast fishers (who do vote) from the real agenda: deregulation of the East Coast fishing industry.
Such a policy would be very unpopular on the East Coast of Canada, as it would likely would likely lead to the destruction of the independent fishing industry. However, if the Harper government can distract the small fishers with 'support' in the form of a massive grey seal slaughter, they hope to escape a voter back-lash in the next federal election.
But the data shows that the cod (and other groundfish stocks) are recovering in the same areas the grey seals have higher populations, proving the grey seals are not holding back the cod recovery. The cod collapsed decades ago due to over fishing, and are only now starting to recover. Destroying the grey seals will only destabilize a tenuous Grand Banks ecosystem, actually threatening the cod recovery.
The proposed grey seal slaughter is only about politics, and has nothing to do with science.

7. Help stop Animal Slaughter houses
Animals are fully conscious when they are slaughtered; the majority of the time they are not given pain killers to help.
The animals that are kept in cages, sometimes not even as big as their body, are living in fear, pain and suffer.
Do we really want our dinner to be an animal that has suffered for us?
If we speak out, we can make a difference, we can help.
8. Stop Horse Slaughter In Canada
Slaughtering Horses For Meat Is Inhumane.
You Don't Kill Something Because It's Hurt Or Is Retired.[e.g. Racehorses.]
Wars Were Won on The Backs Of Horses.
It's Animal Abuse Because They Aren't Getting Any Food Or Water.
9. Stop Horse Slaughter for Good!
Even now, horse slaughter still continues with over the border plants and foreign-owned plants in the US.
Many horses are transported for miles in cramped quarters with poor food and water conditions. Horses are killed by first being stabbed in the back, which paralyzes them. Then they are strung up and cut up, sometimes while still awake. Or, often times they are shot in the head with a gun.
This is not a humane practice! Many healthy, fine horses are shipped there such as pregnant mares, foals, and geldings. Horse slaughter is not necessary! Such cruelty for a delicacy! It is even not healthy for humans, because the medicine given to horses is harmful to humans. Don't allow such abuse. No creature on Earth deserves this!
Stop horse slaughter today and sign this petition!

10. Ban Animal Slaughter For GOOD
I will not settle down until animal slaughter is banned forever.
Join this petition to help me end slaughter and give them better homes.
11. Keep Horse Slaughter Illegal In America
I'm going to make this short, sweet, and too the point. As you may or may not know, Obama quietly signed a bill to allow horse slaughter in America again.
Not only do I not believe in the brutal, inhumane ways of horse slaughter, I do not believe in the consumption of their meat. The horse slaughter plants will be opening again in about a month, or less. For those of you who don't know how a horse is slaughtered - it's not pretty, no mercy is shown to the horses.
Look it up on youtube.com to see for yourself. Simply signing this will not harm you in any way so even if horses are not your favorite animal - why not sign it? Also, don't think "what about cow slaughter?" I'm not saying that's okay, but this is here, for the horses. So, please sign this to save the horses where - yes, there are better endings for them rather than a brutal slaughter.
12. We Demand That Russia Stop Arming Assad, Murderer Of The Syrian People!
On November 14, 2011 it was announced that Russia will honor all arms contacts with Syria despite continuing violence against anti-government protesters in the country, a senior military official said on Sunday.
“Since there are no restrictions on the supply of arms to Syria, Russia will fulfill its obligations under the contracts signed with this country,” Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, told reporters in Dubai.
THIS DESPITE THE FACT THAT OVER 3,500 (UPDATE: That figure is from November, 2011; as of February 2012 the number is OVER 6,000!!! ) (Sorry, that needs to be updated yet AGAIN: On the LAST day of February, 2012, the UN estimated the death toll is now "well over" 7,500, with 100 civilians dying every day!!) SYRIAN MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE BEEN SLAUGHTERED BY ASSAD'S SECURITY FORCES, AND THE FACT THAT THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION KNOWS VERY WELL THAT THE ARMS IT IS SELLING TO SYRIA ARE GOING DIRECTLY TO HAVE!!
13. Stop Denmark's Blood Shame !
Every year the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins in Faroe Island in Denmark are slaughtered and the main participants are young teens.
WHY?
A celebration, to show that they are adults and mature! In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty supporting like a spectator.
Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin Calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, it's near extinction and they get near men to play and interact in a way of PURE friendship.
The dolphins don't die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hooks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim cry like that of a new born child. But he suffers and there's no compassion while this magnificent creature slowly dies in its own blood!
14. Factory Farming: Stop Canada's Disgrace
Scientific proof that farmed animals experience emotions, from pleasure to suffering, is already recognized by the European Union.
Yet factory farmers continue to cage or tether millions of animals in barren conditions, treating them as machines in a production line.
Organic farmers keep farm animals according to the ‘five freedoms’, a set of science-based farming principles set out by the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council:
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst.
2. Freedom from discomfort.
3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease.
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour.
5. Freedom from fear and distress.
Factory farmed animals experience none of these. Unremitting suffering is an ingredient of all factory farmed meat and dairy products. (WSPCA)
15. CLOSE DOWN HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSES
PLEASE PLEASE JOIN THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED I AM STARTING WITH HORSE SLAUGHTER HOUSES IT IS HORRIBLE AND NEEDS TO BE STOPPED I SAW THIS ON A TV SHOW ONCE AND NEEDS TO BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.
Re: Labelling - Legally we should surely be protected by 'The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008' under Part 2, Section 6 'Misleading omissions'.
The majority of UK Consumers do not need costly Official Certification on products eg.Halal or Kosher Certification, because they are not interested in a products authenticity - they just want to know in plain English if products have any religious association and this can be clear with a simple 'RS' Label.
The Over-Production of Ritually Slaughtered meat in the UK must STOP.... the majority of the population do not follow religious dietary laws and just require normal meat. It seems that Halal over-production was allowed to meet increased demand, but that demand is false, as it only happened, because we have all been unwittingly buying & eating UNLABELLED HALAL for more than 10 years... even in the House of Commons!
UK Statutory Instrument 1995 No. 731
The Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995, SCHEDULE 12 Regulations 21 and 22 ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS FOR SLAUGHTER BY A RELIGIOUS METHOD specifies that meat is slaughtered by a muslim - for the food of muslims (or by a jew - for the food of jews).
No where does it state that the religious exemption can be used to slaughter for the mass market.
This slaughter method is a backward step when we consider animal welfare (even with Low-Stun!) and this amount of halal production certainly seems to step outside of the Law!
Why is the government allowing over-production of 7th Century Ritually Slaughtered Halal meat in quantities that far exceed the needs of the muslim minority in 21st Century Britain? 95% of the UK population are NOT muslim and these consumers are not interested in any kind of Religious Regulation or Certification in the name of allah or anyone else.
British Consumers need a simple an 'RS' Label suitable for All Religious Slaughtered meat & its bi-products no matter how it is stunned or what its source is.
ARTICLE 9 HUMAN RIGHTS ACT: Freedom of Conscience - gives us the right to religious and secular freedom, ie to not be forced to participate in religious rites. Dedicating this meat to a foreign god violates this right: What we have now in Britain is forced participation in another's religion without consent. Christians, Sikhs & Hindus are specifically instructed not to eat this meat...
We need to bypass these arguments about stunning: Low-Stun, Post-Stun, No Stun, because we Non-Muslims don't need to know if eg.something is suitable to be certified halal or not... that is a matter for muslims to agree on; However notably the only muslim organisation in the UK which claims to allow 'stunning' is the Halal Food Authority [HFA]. The only form of 'stunning' they permit as part of their strict criteria is a method known as "Ultra-low-amperage-stun" or "Stun to immobilise", and the levels of current used in this method is way, way, below that recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and DEFRA to ensure an animal is fully insensible to suffering and pain at point of killing.
The HFA admit themselves that the 'stun' they support is useless, in their slaughter policy they state:
"2. The animal must not be anaesthetised, stunned to be killed or otherwise rendered wholly insensible prior to slaughter. It must be conscious and alive when it is slaughtered."
RS' can also stand for 'Religious Standard' and could therefore be used on ALL Products that come under any Religious Standard eg. Halal Products & Services including Meat manufacturing, processing & packaging; abattoirs and butchers for Halal slaughtering techniques and procedures, Pharmaceutical Industries & Financial products; Cosmetics, toiletries, personal care, etc.; Imported Products; Eating establishments, Restaurants, fast food chains, canteens and other food outlets.
Anywhere & anything associated with Ritual Slaughter or a Religious Standard needs labelling 'RS' so we fully understand what we are choosing to buy & eat.
Simple 'RS' labelling can be used on both Halal & Kosher products - solely for the benefit of British consumers & their Right to choose. We want profits to go back into the British economy; not for example, as with halal products, to be channelled towards Islamic ends.
We appeal to those in power to authorise the writing of a suitable policy that will make Labelling ALL Religiously Slaughtered meat a Legal Requirement by Law, so that we all know what we are buying & eating.
This needs to happen both in the UK and the EU.
Consumers need to be able to identify whether they are buying or eating normal meat or RS meat, normal products or RS products.
We fear that if we don't do something NOW, we may find that normal meat will be under-produced and soon become very expensive... which would then force non-muslims to have to buy halal with no alternative.
Please make recommendations to label all 'RS' Products by Law to protect the right of the majority of UK Consumers to be able to have a real choice when they make a purchasing decision of what they use, buy or eat.
17. UK Shark Fin Ban
Shark finning is the barbaric act of removing the fins from a live shark and then dumping the fish back into the oceans where it suffers an agonising death. The fins are then used in the production of Shark Fin Soup.
The fins provide no nutritional value or flavour to the dish, merely being served as a symbol of status or celebration. Rivalling the world drug trade in value, this is a big business to break, but with dedication we can achieve our goal.
This group intends to target key political figures, schools and restaurants and promote the benefits of not using shark fin for the production of soup.
18. End Horse Slaughter Canada
Horse Slaughter
With more than 93,000 horses slaughtered in 2009 alone, Canada’s horse slaughter industry is among the largest in the world, and a shameful betrayal against our loyal companions.
Horses are slaughtered in Canada primarily to provide horse meat to European and Asian countries where it is eaten as a delicacy. Horses are brought to slaughter in every possible condition—old, young, sick, healthy, injured, and even pregnant. They are not all unwanted—often, their guardians can no longer afford to keep them, and bring the horses to auction hoping to find them a good home. But horribly, more than 50 percent of horses sold at rural auctions go to slaughter after being bought by “kill buyers”.
A Terrible Journey
Many times, horses are crammed in trailers designed for shorter animals and travel in uncomfortable positions over very long distances. Loading and unloading is extremely stressful and dangerous for horses as they are moved along the relatively steep ramps. Canadian animal transport standards are among the worst in the industrialized world. Current regulations allow horses to be transported for up to 36 hours without food, water or rest.
Inhumane Slaughter—NOT Humane Euthanasia
There have been many reported cases of animal welfare violations in Canadian horse slaughterhouses including failure to provide food and water, illegal unloading of animals, animals left for extended periods in kill pens and sick or injured animals denied veterinary care. Not surprisingly, veterinary experts around the world and leading animal protection groups have denounced horse slaughter as inhumane.
Once the horses are corralled into the slaughterhouse, the end is predictable—violent and bloody. Sometimes injured and emaciated, horses are beaten and electro-shocked in overcrowded pens and must endure the smell of blood and the sights and sounds of other horses in pain and being killed before they, too, are led into a kill chute.
Horse slaughterhouses use the same type of stalls and techniques as cattle slaughterhouses. These stalls are too wide for horses and the captive-bolt stun gun method used with cattle is ill-suited for horses. Horses are an extreme example of a flight animal. The panic and instinctive desire to escape they experience in the slaughterhouse causes them to thrash their heads frantically in the kill chute, making it difficult to effectively stun them prior to slaughter. Witnesses (and video footage) document horses subjected to a sharp blow to the head from the captive-bolt gun three or four times before they are rendered unconscious for exsanguination. In a recent investigation of carcasses discarded by a Canadian slaughterhouse, skulls of many horses processed for meat were found without any holes from a stun gun or rifle whatsoever!
Times Are Changing—Time to ACT
The Canadian horsemeat industry had been in decline in recent years. However, with the closing of the remaining equine slaughter plants in the United States, the number of horses imported to Canada for slaughter has increased by a whopping 49 percent. As a result, several new equine slaughter plants have recently opened in Canada. We need to act now to stop this growing climate of cruelty to horses in Canada!
THIS HAS TO END!!!
My heart is full of pain
My eyes are full of tears
I cried myself to sleep last night
I knew their time was near
I kept on closing my eyes all night
All i saw was their Beautiful faces
Race infront of me
I saw the fear inside their eyes
They knew what was coming for them too
There was no way to escape
Metal gates much taller than their bodies
All the doors and gateways were always shut
They wondered why their beloved humans
Turned so cruel on them now
They wondered why they couldnt run free anymore
They wondered why they were taken away from their Families
Why they couldnt see the blue sky anymore
Why they couldnt taste the sweet grass again
Why there was no more fresh water to drink
Why they couldnt feel the suns warm ray on their bodies
As each stood in the killing shoot today
Their eyes saw the light for the last time
Their Heart took its last beat
They took their last Breath
Still wondering why.......
19. Whistler Sled Dog Killer; Revoke WorkSafe BC claim for PTSD
The individual involved with the mass slaughter of Sled Dogs in Whistler should not be granted a post traumatic stress claim by WorkSafe BC. The actions that he choose were his doing, albeit influenced by his employer.
If the targets were humans and they were killed in the same senseless way would he not be behind bars right now. This individual should be prosecuted under the full extent of the law, not allowed to be free and getting compensated for this atrocious act.
20. Stop the Killing of Dolphins in Taiji, Japan
Every year, over 20,000 dolphins and small whales are killed in 'drive' hunts, hand-held harpoon and cross-bow hunts. In recent years, these hunts have increasingly come under international scrutiny, prompting concern from bodies such as the International Whaling Commission (IWC), on both welfare and conservation grounds. Moreover, the exposure of the brutal slaughter of thousands of dolphins in Taiji by “The Cove”, the Oscar-winning documentary of 2010, has aroused additional public concern over the issue.
In the last 20 years, over 400,000 small cetaceans have been killed in Japanese waters. One form of these hunts is the 'drive hunt', in which dolphins and small whales are rounded up using boats and driven into shallow water where they are killed for their products. During the annual hunt in Taiji and Futo, most of the dolphins are stabbed on the spot, before being loaded onto trucks, sometimes still conscious, to be processed into meat and fertilizer. Young dolphins are ‘saved’ for the captive industry that is the primary motivation for the hunts. Many fisherman have admitted that they would not continue the drive fisheries if it were not for the high prices offered by the captivity industry for wild dolphins.
On the 14th October 2010, an international day of protest has been organized against the killing of dolphins and small whales in Japanese waters. Hundreds of thousands of environmental organization representatives and people from around the world will be outside the Japanese embassies that day to take part in a peaceful demonstration against the continuation of these hunts. Apart from the protest, we want to urge everybody to sign this petition to show your support to end the killing of dolphins in Japan. All the signatures gathered will be sent to the Japanese government.

21. Stop the Australian Government slaughtering our brumbies
Australian governments are removing all brumbies from National parks by several methods the cruellest method is aerial slaughter. Shooting from helicopters at frightened horses running for their lives, leaving the carcasses in place where they fall.
Animals wander around for days till dropping dead babies die of thirst after their mother is killed. little ones break legs trying to run with the herd..Last year in Kosciusko they are sent them by truck 600 kms to slaughter babies pregnant mares, some of the horses were hurt and scared then they faced another gruelling task of the sale yards, with out the Australian public as a whole being aware. April 2011 300 + brumbies are to be aerial culled in carnarvon national Park Queensland.
22. Boycott Nova Scotia Tourism
A plan by the Canadian Fisheries Dept (2009) exists to reduce the Sable Island grey seal population to low or no numbers, either slaughtering them or through a contraceptive plan. This would destroy over 100,000 seals with a few years. The reasoning for doing this is not for sale; the rational is simply that grey seals are 'vermin', because they are accused of preventing the recovery of cod stocks.
Not only is the collapse of the cod completely caused by over-fishing, but the grey seals actually help the cod by preying on small pelagic fish (such as herring) that eat cod eggs and larva. In fact, the grey seal prefers pelagic fish over cod because the former have a higher fat content. There is no scientific evidence the grey seal hampers cod recovery; this planned slaughter is nothing but pure politics, intended to satisfy powerful fishing interests. Please also see the petitions: Stop Mindless Sable Island Slaughter, published by Amy, and Leave the seals on Sable Island in peace Published by Mikayla.
A boycott of Nova Scotia tourism is the best way to bring home strong consequences for such mindless brutality: the Nova Scotia tourism industry produces $1.3 billion annually.
The DFO plan, with tacit approval from Canada and Nova Scotia, is an environmental holocaust . The DFO is not interested in managing the seals , they are interested in wiping species out of existence . If they think that they can get away with this , some day it will be another species that's the target . The government also expects Canadians to put up with supporting $35 million CAN towards this . It's time to end this once and for all.
23. End The Equine Holocaust In Canada
It is an absolute disgrace that Agriculture Canada supports the slaughter of horses to be sold for human consumption in the name of the almighty dollar.
Canada's Dr. Brian Evans of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency states that Canada has strict laws and regulations that “animals are handled and transported humanely.” What is humane about double-decker transport trucks carrying horses sometimes for days, with no food or water, to their demise? Some of them don’t even make it there alive.
Horses have proven themselves to be therapeutic to children and adults alike with disabilities, children and women who have been abused; they’ve plowed our fields, they’ve round up our livestock, they’ve hauled our lumber, they’ve served on our Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and they are our pets – yet our government condones their slaughter? Horses have been domesticated just as dogs and cats have been for years now. This country supplies the European food market with horsemeat; does this mean that we will soon be supplying the Asian food market with cat and dog meat? Where does it end? This entire issue is appalling and disgraceful.
North American was built on the backs of horses and this is how we repay them? Horses are not and should not be auctioned to slaughterhouses for food. If any horse is not purchased by an individual wanting a horse at an auction, any horses left should be humanely euthanized by a Veterinarian on-site so that they are not purchased en masse by kill buyers and transported for slaughter. If these “pets and companions” (to quote Dr. Evans) need to be killed because of age or illness, they should be properly euthanized either by a Veterinarian or the SPCA.
Horses should not be eaten. HORSE SLAUGHTER MUST BE BANNED. It's sickening, it is barbaric and it must be stopped. We want the Canadian laws to change so that Horse Slaughter is outlawed as a criminal offence in this country.
For more information go to http://www.youtube.com and search horse slaughter in Canada.
EchoGreen has been around for years with an intention to Do Something. We are a growing group of writers, musicians, singer songwriters, artists, media producers and web consultants. It's been a long time coming, the need is here.
Recently, as oil leaks into our oceans and we have images of tar rain pouring onto our bodies, homes, vehicles, animals and gardens, we cry for the dolphins, as it rains and we decide, the time is now.
EchoGreen will be sponsoring several petitions with the voice of those who are at one with the earth and its ways in the old way mixed with the new way.
The old way being, feeling the vibration of the earth and the beings, in other words, feeling their life, their voices and their feelings reverberate through our beings, while hearing the voice of the earth as if it is speaking our language and an animate object. Earth is an animate object, we often, have just lost our ability to hear what it has to say. She/it/he is talking to many of us at once. And we have something to say via our translations.
Whereas the new way is through media, through business, through the grid and the economy of the West, speaking out to the people who can make the difference because they have the economy and consumption at their fingertips.
We are the people, we are the change, we are the ones we have been waiting for and we are here. Let's take it for the big one, let's do what we can. Let's petition to businesses, to governments, to presidents, to the people. Let's make our voices loud and clear and let's take a stand.
We live, we eat, we release our waste, we breath, we love, we think, we feel, we dance, we laugh and we play, just as we all do or want to do.
It's time to do this without hurting the earth and others. What can we do? Whatever it is, you know inside you. Start by signing and making petitions and sending them to companies, making them popular. Campaigns are big and our voice can be heard. Do it from the heart and with integrity. Do it with true knowledge about what is best. For instance, how can we be mobile yet not consume oil? How can we receive food yet not have it inefficiently trucked across America? How can we save the seeds and not spread disease? How can we be healthy happy and harmonious?
We can do it. Let's do it, one at a time, before we can no longer breath, eat or stand.
People in Japan are slaughtering millions of defensless dolphins as a form of pest control. They spend six months of the year killing dolphins in secret and saving only a few which are sent to captivity.
The dolphins saved from these slaughters normally kill themselves within four years. Captivity is no life for a dolphin.
If you've heard of the movie "The Cove" you'll know what I'm trying to stop! Spread the word, put slaughtering dolphins to a end!
27. Stop Horses Being Inhumanely Killed at Slaughterhouses
This petition is to stop the legalization of horse slaughterhouses in the state of Missouri!
Horses are being inhumanely killed and sold to foreign countries for human consumption! Something must be done.
28. Ban Horse Slaughter in Canada
Horse slaughter is a cruel and inhumane deed. I, being a horse lover, find many things wrong with this act and would like to have it banned in Canada. Horse slaughter was banned in the United States of America in October of 2006 and the last slaughter plant was closed in August of 2007.
From 2008-present, there have been 0 horses slaughtered in the USA. However, over
42 000 were shipped here to Canada from the USA in 2008 and over 31 000 have already been shipped here this year. Since horse slaughter was banned in California alone, horse theft dropped by 34%. This happened because no one could steal horses and sell them to slaughter plants. Over 402 000 horses were slaughtered in Canada from 2000-2006. There are other alternatives to slaughter, such as humane euthanasia, horse care centers, adoption facilities, or simply selling the horse to a new owner.
Horses have served us for years, being loyal teammates, companions, and workers. Please repay them by signing this petition and stop Canadian horse slaughter today!
I am currently writing my second letter to the Minister of Agriculture in Canada, and I need your help. I am just your average 14-year-old girl. I can't do it alone. If not for me, do it for the horses.
Thank you.
29. Rescind Arabian Horse Association's Motion to Support the Reopening of US Horse Slaughter Plants
On May 16th, 2009 the Arabian Horse Association’s Board of Directors passed motion
#16-5/16/09-BOD stating “we believe the reestablishment of the humane processing of horses is in the best interest of the horse and livestock community and, therefore direct our AHA President, Lance Walters, to support the reopening of U.S. equine processing facilities.”
This endorsement is not in accord with the Arabian Horse Association Mission statement:
To promote growth in the interest in, and demand for the Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horse;
preservation of the integrity of the breed;
increased participation in activities involving the Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horse;
recognition by the equine industry and general public about the value and attributes of the Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horse;
and ensure services and benefits that are valuable and convenient for the AHA members.
As this action does not support the Arabian Horse Association’s purpose, intent, and goals, and does not benefit the Association, the membership, or the Arabian breed, the motion must be rescinded.
30. Say No To Horse Abuse and Slaughter!
Horse slaughter is the practice of slaughtering horses for meat. These animals come from auctions, private sellers, and from wild herds. Sometimes these horses are sick and injured but they can also be for sale by their owners.
Most are brought to the slaughterhouses by contract buyers who collect horses from all across the country, also known as kill buyers. Horses that are killed for reasons other than human consumption go to the renderer's(US) or the knacker's yard (UK) to make food for pets, carnivorous animals in zoos, etc.
In most countries where horses are slaughtered for food, they are processed in a similar fashion to cattle, i.e., in large-scale factory slaughterhouses (abattoirs). The animals are rendered unconscious by being shot in the brain with a metal rod, using a captive bolt stunner - pneumatically or cartridge driven. In the UK a captive bolt is rarely used. They are usually killed using a free bullet from a bell gun.
The skull is too hard to use a captive bolt the bell end to the gun prevents the bullet ricocheting and injuring the slaughterman. They are then killed by being exsanguinated ("bled out") by severing the jugular vein or carotid artery while suspended by the rear leg by a heavy chain shackle.
