This was my first ceremony at OWC and might be my last. There were so many people there, who were also receiving a degree or an award, or their GED, that there wasn't any place to stand in the courtyard of the auditorium.
During the ceremony, Dr. Richburg did mention that this was the largest group ever to graduate OWC. It took three hours for all the awards and degrees to be handed out, and for everyone to say their part.
Some of my family members had gotten sick during the commencement and the whole family used this as an opportunity to escape, just to get away from the crowd. Toward the end there, I vowed not to endure this type of graduation again.
32. Smart Classrooms for East Tennessee State University
March 24, 2006
Hutcheson Hall on East Tennessee State University has been undergoing renovation for the past year.
As the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, we are striving to update our image while providing students with a higher level of education.
Technology is a key factor to providing students with effective learning. Our classrooms are currently out-of-date and need immediate attention.
33. Declaration on Climate Change from Youth of the Arctic
November 2, 2005
In November 2005, the United Nations will meet to discuss the Kyoto Protocol at the 11th Conference of the Parties (CoP-11). This meeting will also be the first time that the UN has met after the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol (MoP-1).
At this landmark event, we would like the UN to recognize the concerns of Youth of the Arctic.
Declaration on Climate Change from Youth of the Arctic.
We, youth from the Circumpolar North, realize that the world is facing a threat unlike anything ever experienced before in human history. Here in the Arctic, where the impacts of climate change are happening at an accelerated rate, we feel our physical environment, our culture, and our spirituality, are being disrupted. Sea ice is melting, coastlines are exposed and degrading, and species are at risk. Communities are being forced to give up land based traditions and Traditional Knowledge is being lost. Indigenous Peoples 'ways of being' continue to be threatened.
Our ecosystems are disturbed; we are vulnerable.
The science surrounding our changing climate has now existed for the same amount of time that we have been alive. Arguing the validity of climate change science is no longer worthwhile- it is now time to act - and act with conviction.
We are supporting research on impacts, mitigation and adaptation to climate change. We are encouraging our peers and our communities to become informed and engaged. Individually, we are taking responsibility for our actions. By reducing our personal greenhouse gas emissions, engaging in activities with lower environmental impacts, and making conscious choices, we are reflecting the world we want to live in.
We are challenging fossil fuel development such as the proposed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, United States, the proposed Mackenzie Pipeline Project in Northwest Territories of Canada and oil drilling in Lensky region of Russia's Sakha Republic. We see the importance in taking steps now to lay a foundation for change that will reach far into the future.
The global community has come a long way in a short time. Thank-you to the United Nations for its Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Kyoto Protocol is a step in the right direction. Thank you for the considerable work carried out by the International Panel on Climate Change. Thank you to the Arctic Council for the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment and to Snowchange for their conference on Northern Indigenous and Local Community Observations of Climate and Ecological Change. These provide critical insight and raise international awareness about the situation of the North.
However, we are concerned that the work being done is not enough. We are concerned that science is not being met with awareness, and plans are not being met with action. More effort needs to be invested by individuals, communities, and governments, if the world is to reduce or reverse the impacts of climate change. We are concerned that the public at large is still unaware and uncertain of the threats of climate change. How can people be motivated to take positive action unless they understand the urgency of the situation?
The economy should no longer come before health and well being. Full cost accounting, or more socially and ecologically based accounting mechanisms should be developed and integrated. Long-term vision needs to be incorporated into climate change response plans, recognizing that political and business timelines are too short.
We would like to help you move forward with a multi-generational, multi-disciplinary vision. We will lobby for climate change to be taught in schools so that today's children are climate change literate and are armed with the tools to act. We will continue to inform the public about climate change and its effects. We will learn to adapt to climate change in a way that considers the impacts of our solutions on the seven generations ahead of us. Our generations are linked, just as the Arctic is linked to the rest of the world. Choices made in the present will exponentially affect the future.
We are willing to make a difference and we challenge you to do the same.
We call on you to help us build the economic, political, and cultural infrastructure necessary for a sustainable future.
We offer you our vision of a strong North and a positive world.
If you protect the Arctic, you protect the world.
34. Mercury Health Waiting List
Mercury Exposure provides consumer information about exposure to the toxin mercury in dentistry, medicine, products and the environment.
Mercury is a known neurotoxin that is not addressed in medicine, dentistry and health insurance. The lack of medical and dental education, diagnostics, treatment and documentation does not support consumer health issues.
Mercury is regarded an environmental problem, whilst medical, dental and household use of mercury is allowed to continue with exemptions.
Medical records have not itemized all exposures to mercury, from dental amalgams placed, vaccines given and other sources of mercury. The amount of mercury received and the onset of chronic conditions is statistically challenged.
Those at a greater risk of mercury exposure are the same groups being targeted with mercury containing vaccines.
The advances in diagnostics and treatment of mercury exposure need to be embraced by general medical education, practitioners and medical specialists.
The industrial and medicinal use of mercury goes well beyond acute occupational exposures, chronic mercury exposure and the increase of chronic disease requires statistical performance science documentation of patient exposure from continued use of small and large quantities of mercury in medicine, vaccines and dentistry.
35. Stop the Closure of RMIT Bundoora East Campus
This Petition has been started in an effort to stop the closure of RMIT University's Bundoora East Campus at the end of 2006.
The decision to close the Campus was reached by the Executive Committee of the CS&IT School on Wednesday, 20th July 2005.
On Thursday, 21 July 2005 the following email was sent to students:
"Dear Bundoora Campus Students
Yesterday, the Executive Committee of the CS&IT School made a decision to stop all intake of students into our programs at Bundoora East Campus with the aim of vacating all of our offices at Bundoora by the end of 2006.
This decision was not taken lightly and the Executive Committee realises this decision will have an adverse impact on many of you. The main reason that has led to this decision is that the School has been operating below critical mass at the Bundoora East Campus for some years now. We do not see any major changes occurring in the near future to alter this. The School is therefore unable to provide you with the range of services we consider so vital throughout the duration of your studies. To continue indefinitely with a lack of critical mass is not desirable nor conducive to a quality teaching and learning experience.
Thus, the Executive has decided to concentrate the School's energies into strengthening its teaching and learning activities at the City Campus. Also, yesterday the Teaching Committee of CS&IT decided to continue the C&IT program, but transfer it to the City campus, i.e. the first year courses for this program will be offered at the City Campus in 2006, while second and third year courses will continue at Bundoora for 2006.
Regards,
Professor Heiko Schroder
Head of School
School of Computer Science & IT
RMIT University"
36. Desovietize science in free Republic of Poland
This petition is to Polish Parliament to free laws abouts poish science and education.
The current law is the carbon - copy of soviet laws regulating science and education structure under military regime.
We ask Polish Parliament to take affirmative steps to desovietize Polish science and education. The current laws regulating financing and structure of Polish academia are nothing but make-uped Soviet laws corrupting freedom of education and science of Polish Nation.
Some of the afirmative steps sould be: lack of requrement of National Exams as entry requrement into Private Universities, Liquidation and clear condemation of Polish Academy of Science as Soviet invigilation device during occupation of Soviet Army.
The following steps are also needed: Liquidation of so called Public Institues, the highest form of soviet ties between communist military and science, Liquidation of so called Professor nominated, highest form of illegal invigilation of communist state over private academia having now the same rights and being obtructed like public, lay off of all scientific personell working under owe of occupied communist states PRL.
37. Close Polish commitee of scientific research
This petition asks the Polish Parliament to close one of the last relics of Soviet domination in the free Republic of Poland, the Polish committee of scientific research.
38. Full time Day Program for the 'Bachelor degree of Biomedical Science' program.
Currently, MDIS do not offer a day program for the 'Bachelor degree of Biomedical Science' program.
39. Establish a Science Resource Center at Edith Cowan University-School of Education
Establish a Science Resource Center that for a fee makes available resources for science lessons for Graduate Teachers to access once employed.
"RIFTS"(by Palladium Books) is a pen/paper RPG that I think would make an awesome MMORPG. They say that over 100,000 copies of the game book has been sold. It is a world that puts both fantasy and science fiction together in a perfect blend. The worlds and the characters are some of the best I have ever seen. We need a new breed of MMORPGs and I think RIFTS will be the game to do it. Even a RIFTS movie is being made. I am asking anyone who also thinks that a RIFTS MMORPG should be made soon to please sign this petition and please spread the word. Then, we may be able to see one of the best RPGs transformed into one of the best MMORPGs. Thank you for your support!
Below is an example of RIFTS:
"Rifts® is a multi-genre role-playing game that captures the elements of magic and the supernatural along with science fiction and high technology. It spans countless dimensions making anything and everything possible. Players are limited only by their imaginations!
Rifts® is a complete, role-playing game that can stand alone or be combined with characters and elements from the entire Palladium Megaverse®. Players can easily bring in characters from Heroes Unlimited, Robotech®, Nightbane, RECON®, Mystic China, The Palladium Fantasy RPG, or any of Palladium's RPGs".(taken from palladiumbooks.com)
41. Abolish Evolution From Science Textbooks
This petition is to abolish evolution from science textbooks and move it to social studies textbooks since it is technically a religion. Children are being taught evolution as a fact, not a theory.
42. bring back mystery science theater 3000
Mystery science theater is the best show ever made ...period go watch one and find out ... it needs to come back and now!
43. Allow Science Fair Project
I am trying to conduct a science fair project on propulsion using high voltage asymmetrical capacitors, with no moving parts. The SRC Board has turned down my project and stated that my designated supervisor needs a PhD in Physics, the project needs to be conducted in a qualified lab, and I need to use a voltage lower than the required voltage for the project to operate. These restrictions are unnecesary
44. Choice of Math Courses at Alberta Learning
Students are required to take a 30 level Math course to recieve a diploma. However, the requirement for Science courses is only 15 credits. After completing a 10 level Science course, students may choose to focus their education on physics, chemistry, or biology. This should be the same for Math. The curriculum contains so many formulas and calculations that the only reason someone would be required to know ALL of this is if they became a math teacher. Math courses should be seperated into smaller sectors or categories so that a student may enroll in the course that best fits their career plans. For example, a student aspiring to be a writer would not be required to learn the equations needed to become an engineer. Rather, they could take one of these specific category math courses (a basic math course for example that will teach only things to get you by in life) and be able to focus on their english or social social studies courses.
Many people go on to forget or not apply most of these teachings, unless their career choice involves math. Even still, those that require math for their careers only require knowledge of certain portions of the teachings, hardly ever all portions.
45. MST3K: The Movie DVD deserves wide release at a reasonable price
Currently the extremely rare DVD for "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" is not only no longer being produced, but currently costs $129.95 US and contains no extras. This cult classic deserves a wide release and at least the trailer in the dvd, at a reasonable price.
46. End maternal deprivation experiments on primates @ SUNY
This current campaign is seeking to end more than three decades of cruel and unnecessary primate research at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Leonard Rosenblum, director of the Primate Behavior Laboratory at the SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, has forced monkeys to undergo maternal separation or deprivation in order to "model" human ailments such as panic and anxiety disorders. Mr. Rosenblum has been performing his sadistic experiments at SUNY on mother monkeys and their infants for over 30 years.
Picture this: a young monkey sits terrified and immobile with its head below his knees. His arms are wrapped around himself and its toes are tightly curled. This is the essence of Rosenblum's experiments Deprived of their mothers, these normally playful infants become frightened and withdrawn. Since 1990 he has funded his brutal research with over 2.5 million dollars in taxpayer money. LET'S STOP HIM NOW.
A petition to protest the Kyoto Treaty. We, college students from across the United States, urge our nation's leaders to insist on the use of science-based evidence - and well-reasoned economics - rather than hypothetical computer models in any negotiations concerning international climate policy.
48. Australians for Science and Technology
Over 50% of Australias high technology jobs are now being sourced from overseas. Australia continues to reduce funding to universitys, science, technology and research.
Without a substantial increase in funding Australia will fall even further behind the rest of the world.
