31. Gabby's Law for School Bus Stop Safety
Every day, twice a day through out the school year our children stand beside busy roads waiting for the school bus without any safety measures to warn motorists. In Florida alone 3-7 children are killed annually at their school bus stops.
The school districts rely solely on the school bus being at the stop for bus stop safety, but until the bus arrives our children are vulnerable. Since Gabrielle (Gabby) Mair's death on June 1, 2010, four other children have been killed at their bus stop waiting for the bus and after the bus left.
Warning signs for motorist as to the location of the bus stop with temporary reduced speedlimit on roadways with speedlimits greater than 25 MPH would eliminate or greatly reduce the needless tragic deaths.
32. Petition for CHAMPS Democratic Process for Nomination and Election of Board of Directors
CHAMPS Charter High School, Van Nuys, Ca.
[Important Note - When signed anonymously your name and info will not be shown to anyone other than the Petition Administrator and possibly a Notary Public for verification purposes. *Petition Administrator]
To implement the Democratic Process for Nomination and Election of CHAMPS Board of Directors with representation of all stakeholder groups as provided in the CHAMPS charter and bylaws.
Explanation:
It is understood that the acting Board of Directors efforts have been with the best of intent. Those efforts are greatly appreciated by all stakeholder groups. However, it has become apparent that as the school achieves the necessary growth that insures its longevity, that the governing role proportionately becomes broader in spectrum and demands a broader view from the diverse perspectives of all stakeholder groups.
It is the goal of this petition to motivate actions that will ultimately lead to increased transparency, communication, checks and balances, accountability, and a broad overall view in respect to the governance of CHAMPS.
This can best be served by following provisions in the Charter and Bylaws as outlined below:

34. Keep Prince Philip Elementary School Open in Ainslie Wood
Prince Philip Elementary School is an integral part of the Ainslie Wood neighbourhood.
We deeply believe the best interests of its students are served by keeping the school open.
35. Newly Elected Board for Island Education
Dear Friends,
Over the last few years, we’ve experienced many changes in our children's education. Now, we're starting to understand the consequences and its effects to our Island children. The consequences include but are not limited to:
* Island children having the lowest academic scores in Canada.
* An on-going battle with kindergarten children on buses with older aged children;
* An increasing number of children on buses for longer periods of time;
* Classroom over crowding;
* School closures due to poorly maintained buildings;
* Exorbitant amounts of money being spent to maintain old schools and build new ones without studies or planning;
* The demise of an elected board; and
* Schools closures.
I ask you: can it get any worse?
Well, I fear it's about to. Island children have only ONE voice, a provincially- appointed official who is a representative of the voices that have caused the deterioration of our education system.
We need to work together. We have to call on our elected officials to change legislation right away. The Eastern School District (ESD) needs to have an elected board put in place as soon as possible.
Please join me and other community members and parents by signing this petition. We will present this petition to the Ghiz Government and Minister Currie.
I've spoke to a lot of you, and would love to speak to more of you. If you have further questions please feel free to email (martiemurphy@gmail.com) or call me directly 629-5125.
As a community member and a parent I'm concerned. I need your help to make the changes we need to get our education system back on track. Please feel free to forward the petition to friends, family and community members. We need to work together to have the changes made.
Thanks so much,
Martie Murphy
President Rural Alliance
36. Reward the IB Sophomores for the Garden!
Last year, the freshman students enrolled in the IB/MYP program at Atlantic Community High School were assigned with a task altogether to help grow the school garden and grow produce to donate to food charities.
The students who worked on this garden were also promised to attain Community Service hours for working on the garden. After speaking to many of my fellow students we have all agreed this is reasonable.
37. Stop Icknield High School becoming an Academy
On 31st March Icknield High School in Luton began a consultation to convert to Academy status. This will take the school out of Local Authority control.
This will make the school undemocratic, and open to be sold to the highest bidder. Local Authorities, which have democratic structures, are best placed to run schools.
38. SAVE BANCROFT
The EMSB wants to close Bancroft Elementary to "offer the best we can give them in terms of an educational experience". Give me a break! Bancroft has been part of Montreal for generations and for good reason.
Not only are we the only school located in front of the biggest green space in Montreal but academics take a front seat. With an intense english and french program and so many extra-curricular activities I can proudly say that we are offering them the best in terms of an educational experience.
And with the most dedicated teaching staff I know these children are growing morally and emotionally in an atmosphere of cooperation and support. There is no choice.
BANCROFT NEEDS TO STAY OPEN!
WE DID IT!!!!!! BANCROFT WILL STAY OPEN!!!!
Thanks to every single person who helped. We couldn't have done it without everyone on board.
39. Against the Massive Teacher Layoffs in California
Over 19,000 layoff notices were given to teachers throughout the state of California, a state that has seen periods of crisis similar to such before. An Educational cut of this magnitude will effect classrooms throughout the state substantially.
"These current cuts are sure to push us further down the scale. Our future depends on our ability to prepare the next generation for success in the hyper-competitive global economy. The budget crisis and the teacher layoffs we are now witnessing makes that challenge much, much harder. In order to deliver the quality education our students need we must get off this budget roller coaster and find a stable, long-term solution to education funding. Our future depends on it."
Jack O'Connell- State Superintendent of Public Instruction
40. Stop Tile Hill Wood Secondary School from becoming an Academy
The Governing Body of Tile Hill Wood School and Language College in Coventry are considering applying for academy status. This will remove Tile Hill Wood from the local family of schools and the support of Coventry City Council.
We oppose this. Tile Hill Wood is a good school and believe there is no benefit to be gained from changing it. However, there are considerable risks involved if it becomes an academy.
41. Funding for children with disabilities in School
My son is 9 and from the start of school there was no place
for him to "fit in" He has Aspergers, ADHD, Reactive
Attachment disorder, speech and language issues and
profound sensory processing issues. He however does not
have an intellectual disability so he is not eligible for Special
school.
He is a gorgeous boy, with so much potential to learn in
the right environment. The QLD school system has let him
down so badly he is now attending a private school, paid for
by his family and by donations, who needs the funding he
receives from main stream school (even though he only
attends there 4 hours a week, with me present) to be used
for a Teachers aide for him at his new school, where he
feels safe and is completing school work and attending
occupational therapy and speech therapy as well. My son
is extremely high needs and needs one on one, which this
school is unable to provide, BUT can provide the security
and safe environment for him to learn grow and prosper.
42. Commemorating Prescot Grammar School
Prescot Grammar School was the second oldest grammar school in Britain until it became Knowsley Park Centre for Learning in 2009. This represents an amazing 463 years of distinguished history from the time of Henry VIII to the twenty-first century.
Many notable students can trace their education back to PGS and its often inspired and remarkable teachers. It is sad that such an institution is not commemorated within the town of Prescot at any of the three main locations its inhabited.
43. Traffic Light in Torbay intersection near schools
The town of Torbay is a beautiful place to live and raise a family. One major turn off from this town is the speed in which the traffic travels and there are congested intersections that are extremely difficult to get out of in a timely manner.
The intersection of Torbay Road, Marine Drive and Convent Lane being one of them. During times of high traffic it can be very hard to exit in either direction to make a left hand turn onto Torbay road from Marine Drive or Convent Lane due to the fact that you can not see very far in either direction. You have a blind hill on one side and a blind turn on the other side.
In my opinion this is quite hazardous. Not to mention that there is not one but two schools less than a half of a kilometre from this intersection and the school buses drivers use this to exit onto the main drag to return their precious passengers home at he end of the school day. The speed of the traffic and inability to see the vehicles coming is dangerous for those children who are walking home and need to cross Torbay Road. Although there is a flashing yellow light, it isn't enough.
So before something tragic happens, I am suggesting that a four-way traffic light be placed at the intersection of Torbay Road, Marine Drive and Convent Lane.
44. Keep Aviara Parkway At 40 MPH, Introduce Traffic Calming
The Carlsbad City Council is considering raising the speed limit along the two-mile stretch of Aviara Parkway between Poinsettia and El Camino Real. Currently, the speed is 40 MPH. The proposal is to raise it to 45 MPH. By raising the speed limit, Carlsbad police would be able to collect on the tickets they write on this section of roadway.
Due to changes in state law, the courts currently do not recognize the ticketed infractions as enforceable. Increasing the speed limit at this location would put school children and pedestrians at unnecessary risk. In March 2011, Carlsbad agreed to pay a $2.9 million settlement for creating hazardous conditions that led to injuries in an accident on La Costa. There too the speed limit had been raised from 40 MPH to 45 MPH.
The court agreed with the accident victims that the speed was excessive.
45. More Fairtrade Products in Schools - Fairtrade the Fair Way
On average, producers are able to sell only 20% of their output through Fairtrade channels; the rest of it still goes to the ordinary market...thus proving the need for us to buy more products of this nature.
Our petition demands for more Fairtrade products to be sold on our supermarket shelves, regardless of cost, and for more of these products to be available in local schools in order to encourage their sale and set an example for future generations.
46. Stop Townley School Closing
This Does Not Benefit Our Children!
Not only would it cause hardship on our sister schools, our children, their families, and faculty but it would be destructive to the community has a whole…
WCBOE needs to reconsider closing our school and think about the future generations.
47. Save Fife Classroom Assistants
Classroom Assistants and Clerical Staff were called to a meeting today with their Head teachers today (9th February 2011) and we were advised that we should be aware of the next set of job cuts to come from Fife Council. We were told to expect cuts in our hours, and a possibility of redundancies.
So once again education is being hit hard. First the playground supervisors, now lollipop men/women, classroom assistants and clerical staff but, who is it that is going to suffer? Not the powers that be at Fife Council who are making all these decisions but the children. Do the people who make these decisions have any idea how a school is run and just how much support staff are required to run the school effectively? Have they come in and shadowed a classroom assistant to see what their role entails?
Gone are the days of cleaning out paint pots. I personally feel we make a huge difference in schools. Why not ask the Head teachers and the teachers to see how they would feel if they lost the support of their classroom assistant. I also urge parents to question this decision because it's their children who will not be getting the extra support that some of them may require to keep them on task. We don't want to go back years ago when children just slipped through the net because there was not enough staff to support the needs of the school.
We work with children of all abilities including the same children that a Pupil Support 2 works with (who are on a higher grade) but I do it because that is what the needs of my school are and at the end of the day we are there to support the teacher and the pupils.
48. Stop The Decrease in Military Educational Benefits for Vets
New Post 9/11 GI Bill taking effect lowers our annual cap to $17,500. When previously capped at over $20,000 annually for vets receiving 100% of GI Bill benefits.
The previous cap was enough to attend a majority of U.S. educational institutions with no out of pocket expenses for example flight costs for pilot bound degree seeking students.
Pilot expenses are usually charged $300-$450/hr. Our previous cap at over $20,000 annually with Yellow Ribbon Program benefits covered all tuitional costs, whereas our new cap at $17,500 causes us to pay out of pocket expenses.
49. Stop Kevin Baxter from extending the school year by twenty days
Dr. Kevin Baxter, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, has mandated a change for all local Catholic schools' calendars.
The current calendar of 180 days will be extended to 200 days, effective this year for 70 percent of Catholic schools. Dr. Baxter failed to follow WCEA guidelines that state clearly that parents are the primary educators of children, and parents are partners in educating their children alongside the school. Instead, parents received a unilateral proclamation without any ability to protest or offer feedback.
Dr. Baxter has clearly stated that surveys were inappropriate because parents are not surveyed in these matters. This is a fundamental change to the quality of life of the children of Catholic schools, who will now lose a third of their summer vacation and be forced to forgo many of the pleasures of summer they have always enjoyed, such as bonding time with friends and family, trips to visit extended family, and enrichment opportunities of the parents choosing.
50. Save Essex School Bus Escorts
Essex County Council has announced to parents that it is to make it's school bus escorts redundant from Easter 2011.
It's decision raises many safety concerns with the County's parents and we are urging them to reverse their decision.
51. Fairness for King George Students and Parents
The Upper Grand District School Board has chosen Waverley Drive Public School to be the home of English-track King George Public School students while the new King George school is being built.
Waverley is located several kilometres from the King George site and the Board is expecting students to walk up to 45 minutes to and from school along and across busy roads, including arterial roads such as Eramosa and Speedvale.
However, due to safety concerns, it is unlikely that many students will actually walk. Many parents will be forced to drive their child to school, causing traffic congestion and safety concerns at Waverley. Parents unable to drive their child may send their child to school on a City bus, but some parents will be unable to afford the cost - more than $600 for the school year.
Parents choose where to live based upon their personal perception of their child's safety when walking to school, and affordability if their child needs to take a City bus. It is unfair for the Board to impose new conditions on the families affected by their transition project. Such Board initiatives should be designed to avoid unnecessary disruption to families, and potential danger to students.
A solution discussed among parents has students continuing to walk to and from a site near King George, and the Board providing a quick 'shuttle' bus between King George and Waverley.
This solution allows the healthy walking culture at schools such as Laurine Avenue and Ottawa Crescent Public Schools to continue, while providing safe transportation to Waverley.
The Board's King George transition project has a budget near $9 million. Most parents of students walking to and from King George have subsidized the busing of students at other schools for many years. Now students in the King George area need busing - for one school year - and parents are being told the well is dry. Surely the board can find the funds to provide shuttle busing to and from Waverley while a new King George Public School is built.
52. Support Traffic Lights at School Intersection
There have been several near-miss situations with respect to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Heavy traffic patterns throughout various times of the day result in long wait periods for drivers travelling east/west or turning left to travel north/south.
Current crosswalk light system is insufficient for the following reasons:
1. Safety of pedestrians and school crossing guards during peak school traffic periods.
2. Safety of pedestrians during non-peak school traffic periods.
3. Vehicular traffic has increased significantly, rendering present crosswalk light insufficient.
4. Vehicular traffic uses intersection as 4-lane, instead of 2-lane. Many drivers go around a vehicle turning left without taking the crosswalks into consideration.
5. Development continuing in the area which will increase vehicular traffic.
53. Adoptees, The Forgotten Ones
We will present all World Leaders with the signatures plus the stories of adoptees to make them give every adoptee the right to know their heritage. Can you imagine looking in the mirror and not knowing who looks back at you or developing a serious illness and wondering if you had known your family history, it could have been treated earlier?
Can you imagine living your whole life asking who you are and being too scared to ask in case you offend someone? Help adoptees have the same human rights as any other human being - knowledge of their heritage.
Let's stop World Leaders brushing all this under the carpet and force them to change legislation that will help give adoptees back the lives they were born with.
We want sealed adoption files opened, lost information found in all countries and our heritage returned to us.
We want to stop being punished for something that was totally out of our control when we were babies. We accept no more guilt and ask that we be given open access to our documents and free DNA testing when it is asked for.
We want all these issues dealt with, but we need YOUR help. Please sign our petition so our plight can be brought to the attention of our World Leaders
54. Reinstate Stalyhill's School Crossing Patrol
Tameside Council has withdrawn the school crossing patrol for Stalyhill Junior and Infants Schools, Stalybridge, due to 'government cuts', yet is able to find hundreds of thousands of pounds each year for non-essential items such as its Tameside Citizen council newspaper.
Please don't put children's lives at risk, Tameside Council. Give us our lollipop lady back!
55. Educate Senior school children about Special needs and disabilities
Disability is now supported in the workplace yet many young people are being picked on at school. This is because many young people do not understand these conditions. Autism and ADHD are now VERY common yet our children have no idea about them and nor do many adults. Please sign and support if you believe it should be part of the National Curriculum for children to learn about Special Needs and Disabilities in school.
I have a son who has ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome and know how hard it is for many children with special needs in Senior School in the United Kingdom because there is little or no understanding.
56. Save Whitley Excellence Cluster
Reading Borough Council is currently proposing to cease funding for the Whitley Excellence Cluster, despite the increase in attainment and aspiration that it has been shown to lead to.
This petition was presented to Reading Borough Council on 14th February and received extensive local press coverage.
There were over 600 paper based signatures as well as the online ones
Unfortunately the lead councillor for education, Cllr Mark Ralph was not willing to take any action to support the continuing work.
This is despite the impact he acknowledged it has had on education in the area.
This petition doesn't ask Reading Borough council to keep necessarily keep funding at the existing level, but for them to stop being complacent and to act now find a way to protect this essential support to children in South Reading.
However the campaign will continue and we will look for other ways to support South Reading's schools, so please sign and we will send you occasional updates.
Please also take a look at the website.
57. Support Islamia School Expansion
Islamia Primary School is hoping to build a new two-storey school on part of its existing site, to provide 21st century education and learning opportunities for its pupils. The current school was built over one hundred years ago and the buildings no longer meet pupil or teacher needs. Islamia Primary is also an extremely popular and over-subscribed school, on average receiving ten applications for every place available, and it urgently needs to expand to cater for the current pupils on roll and to meet the growing demand for places across the borough.
Islamia Primary School’s site has always been used for educational purposes. The school itself was founded in 1983 by Dr Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens). In 1989, it moved to its present site at 129 Salusbury Road. Nine years later, it became the first Muslim school in England to be awarded grant maintained status, which meant that the vast majority of the school's funding came from central government. The following year it opted to become a voluntary aided school, in 2007 the school took on an additional 138 pupils, following the closure of The Avenue School in Brondesbury Park. The main site at Salusbury Road is also shared with an independent Muslim girl's secondary school, which occupies the entire first and second floor of the buildings, and parts of the ground floor. This school is not part of the re-development proposal. The rebuild is needed as the existing buildings are leaky, not energy efficient, not compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and are spread out on many different levels, with stepped access and no lift. The proposed new building will provide easy access for all pupils and adults, including those with visual and hearing impairments and those with special educational needs (SEN), including speech, language and communication difficulties, and severe learning disabilities. The proposed new school will provide these pupils with a dedicated room and space for educational psychologists, speech and language therapists and school nurses to come in and offer support. In general all the facilities at the site are inadequate for a modern school.
The new school plan is to build a new, modern and inspirational school, which will meet the needs of current and future generations of pupils. The building will reflect the school's faith and its ethos and will allow improved links with the local community, by opening its facilities at set times out of school hours. For example, by providing space for adult education, health and fitness and a canteen, which can be used by parents.
There will also be:
Fourteen new classrooms, a dedicated children's library, a specialist teaching room for SEN, an enlarged roof-top play area, a dedicated prayer area, landscaped areas and additional outdoor learning spaces for all children , a children's gym.
From September 2011 new pupils attending Islamia Primary School will have to live within the catchment area of the school, which will mean significantly less pupils travelling in from outside the borough. Currently 40 per cent of pupils come in from neighbouring boroughs.
The school is urgently fundraising for this development.

58. Islamia Primary School planning application
Brent Council intends to grant planning permission that would lead to an 800 place complex of schools on the site of Islamia Schools, Salusbury Road NW6. However the plans are in direct contravention of policies in transport, sustainability and local amenity.
Key statutory and local bodies have not been consulted. The project is falsely presented as the building of a single 400 place primary but it in fact opens the door to an 800 place school. Transport for London guidelines on assessing traffic have been ignored, so the plans evade the impact of up to 1200 car journeys daily in an area where 1700 pupils are already at schools within a 300 m radius.
The admissions policies on which the plans will depend have not been published. It disregards the Grade II listed site beside it and has not consulted English Heritage, as is required in such cases. It grossly overdevelops a school site originally devised for around 200 pupils, and provides wholly inadquate play space for the 800 children who would be accommodated there. It has removed sport and ball-playing space for building, and not replaced it.
59. Unblock Websites on School Computers
Lately, many of the sites at our schools have been blocked. While the school board claims that this is because of teachers abusing sites such as Facebook during school hours, there were no grounds for blocking other sites such as Grooveshark, Miniclip, etc.
60. Free School Petition for a Lewisham Montessori Primary School
This petition is to demonstrate support for the campaign for a Montessori Primary School in Lewisham. The campaign is driven by the need for more reception class places in the borough and a commitment to the right to choose the Montessori method.
A new Montessori state school would provide parents with more choice and benefit children through a distinct method of teaching that has proved hugely successful in many schools around the world for more than 100 years. To keep up to date with our campaign see our Facebook page here:
