1. STOP KIDNAPPING IN ABIA STATE NIGERIA

Since 2005, Abia state that was formally know as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria suddenly started experiencing armed Rubbery. Banks, residents and companies being the target of these robbers.

Then from 2008 till date, KIDNAPPING has been the order of the day and Abia state residents now have their hearts on their hands. No single day passes in Aba the commercial city of Abia state and its suburbs without an issue of kidnapping of one person or the other. It has gone to a stage where no one is exceptional or regarded anymore, as even the ELDERLY and KIDS are being kidnapped tortured and abused before they will be released on ransom, some eventually die in the process. On the 9th of September 2010, at Nwogu street, Umungasi, in front of a super store adjacent to Binez hotels Aba, a Foreigner an Indian citizen was murdered in cold blood as he refused to adhere to the command of the kidnappers to come out of his vehicle.

Recently the medical director of Victory Hospital Aba was kidnapped with his wife on their way coming back from the village, they were asked to pay a huge sum of money for their release, their relative and friends gathered some money to pay for their ransom, yet the kidnappers were not satisfied with the amount that they've obtained from this couple, they finally released the Doctor's wife to go and bring more 3million naira which the woman hurriedly went and brought to them, but to her greatest shock, when she demanded that her husband be released to her, the kidnappers told her to go home that she will find her husband on the road, true to their word she found her husband on the road but DEAD!!!

So far so good, the police have tried in their little capacity to halt the situation, but the more they try the more the situation gets worse, as the people involved in the crime are heavily equipped with all sort of arms for their operation.

Businesses have gone down drastically because there are no more patronage. Aba is the commercial town of Abia state and the home of Ariaria International Market, one of the largest manufacturing markets in Nigeria and Africa at large, this market attracts so many patronage from home and abroad, but since these issue of kidnapping and rubbery, investors both existing ones and intending ones are no where to be found as most of them have been the victim of kidnap and rubbery who after paying heavily for their ransom decided to desert the business environment.

If things are left the way it is without action by the federal government, then the aim of having free and fair elections come 2011 will certainly be defeated.

2. Security at Circle K

We know that security at the Circle K stores especially in Erie Pennsylvania are currently being targeted with hateful crimes. Robbery.. With the fact that there are not a lot of cameras or secure lighting.

What boggles my mind is even after a 5 th robbery by three men and a corner street shoot out.... still no action from the company. No additional camera and More times then none is the person that is on the 2nd and 3rd shift alone after 9 pm. Is that what he want in our neighborhood? Now July 29th Pine ave Circle K was robbed yet again. Something has to happen !

We want to know that we can walk to the community convenience store and be safe. We want the company to take all the precautions necessary to make sure they have an establishment that is safe for there employees and customers.

3. Condemnation for the Brutal Killing of Mrs. Lilia de Vera's Family

We, the Filipinos residing in the Philippines and overseas, strongly condemn the brutal killing of Mrs. Lilia de Villa's husband and 7-year old daughter by policemen pursuing a robbery gang on Dec. 5, 2008 in Paranaque City. This wanton act of savagery and blatant disregard for "Rules of Engagement" by the very same policemen who are supposed to be the guardians of public safety show the ineptitude of our law enforcers and their utter disregard for human life.

According to the account of Mrs. de Vera "my husband's face was unrecognizable because he was shot in the head at close range while he was kneeling with his head bowed down. My daughter's young body was riddled with bullets, one hit her head, blowing her brains out, all from powerful guns and ammunition fired by the men in uniform on two innocent and defenseless persons." What was the only crime of the victims? They were mistaken for robbers while driving their SUV Crosswind in the vicinity of the shoot-out. Based on some eyewitness accounts, the police sprayed bullets on the van, despite the absence of any provocation from the van and in an effort to save their lives, Mr. De Vera grabbed his already bloodied daughter and run away from the van to seek cover from a parked jeepney. Nonetheless, he was shot at close range. How can one mistake a man clutching a bloodied girl for a robbery suspect? Or was this a case of eliminating the only witness who could pinpoint the killers of the girl?

As usual, after a few days in the news and as the victims are not well-known or influential persons in Philippine society, media stopped news coverage and the public is not aware whether the perpetrators of the crime have been brought to the bar of justice.

4. Let’s make sure Malta stays a safe country!

One of Malta’s most attractive points is the relative safety in which we go about our daily lives. Up to recently, Maltese nationals and foreigners residing in Malta alike, all went about their daily lives, knowing that they live in a safe environment.

No one ever thought that in Malta you could get mugged in your own street, just outside your own home! What has this country come to? Have we fallen in love with the EU to the extent that we want our crime levels to mirror those of most states?

A friend of mine moved to Malta recently as “it is a safe place to bring up your children”! At this rate, if the authorities do nothing about it, these lovely words will carry no more weight!

Are the respective authorities on the ball on this subject? Should we revert to Neighbourhood Watch in highly sensitive villages and towns, to tackle this issue? What are we waiting for? Some real serious accident to happen, perhaps? An over-protective parent or boyfriend, acting impulsively to save their valuables, ending up seriously injured at the hands of these criminals?

5. WE DON'T WANT A THREE STRIKES AND YOUR OUT LAW IN CONNECTICUT

A Three Strikes Law is really not necessary. There are persistent larceny and felony offender laws which involve significant enhancements for these types of crimes and offenders. We cannot keep creating laws based on one unforeseeable, and unpredictable events. People plead guilty to crimes they never committed every day to avoid trial, lost time from work and some just because they are STUPID.

These Cheshire guys had been convicted of enough violent felonies to keep them locked up for the rest of their lives. Home invasions and robberies are some of the most egregious and dangerous crimes and are usually punished as such. But no one could have ever foreseen that these two men would graduate from cat burglary to rape, child rape, kidnapping, and multiple murders.

Please THINK before you ask the government to create new laws. Research before you create petitions. The last thing we need is more laws.

Petition the government NOT to create a Three Strikes Law in Connecticut.

6. Police Officer Robert Sorrentino, deny Russell Carroll parole

UPDATE 11/3/08: Russell Carroll's parole hearing has been scheduled for December 2008.

UPDATE, 2/16/2007: Russell Carroll has been denied parole for this year. Thank you all for your continued support and kind words. I am keeping this petition up and active, as his next parole hearing is scheduled for February 2009.

.................................................

On April 10, 1980, NYPD Officer Robert Sorrentino of the 101st Pct. was shot three times while chasing several robbery suspects in Far Rockaway, Queens.

He and his partner had split up to chase the suspects who had also split up. After his partner captured one of the suspects, he heard shots fired and ran to the scene where he found Officer Sorrentino suffering gunshot wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital and, after undergoing more than fifteen hours of surgery, the removal of one of his kidneys, and extensive repairs to his pancreas, the married father of three later died from his wounds on April 24, 1980. The five men were sentenced on 106 counts of felony murder, robbery, and weapons charges. They were all given the maximum sentence, 25 years to life. All but one have since died in prison.

Russell Carroll, who was on parole at the time he committed this crime, is up for parole for the second time in February 2007, and will be eligible for parole every two years after that. My family, still grieving, do not want to see this man go free.

7. Police Officer George Werdann

January 15, 2004

On February 21, 1982 New York City Police Officer George Werdann was shot and killed by Jose R. Curet after Mr. Curet committed an armed robbery. Officer Werdann had witnessed Jose R. Curet and an accomplice fleeing the scene of the armed robbery when he began his pursuit of them.

At some point approximately 2 blocks away, Jose R. Curet secreted himself in a hiding spot while his accomplice continued to flee.

When Officer Werdann passed Mr. Curet, he suddenly leaped out and shot and killed Officer Werdann. Jose R. Curet was captured and sentenced to 20 years to Life. While his accomplice was freed on parole a few years ago, Mr. Curet was denied parole 2 years ago due in part to violations he committed while incarcerated.

This is a petiiton to STRONGLY OPPOSE the parole of Jose R. Curet.

8. Justice for William Jonathan Mayo

William Jonathan Mayo has been incarcerated for almost (11) eleven years for a crime he did not commit. I know what you are thinking, "All prisoners claim they are innocent". I will admit to have said that myself. But the more I learned about Mr. Mayo's background, trial and sentence, I began to do something I would have never thought I would ever do, "Help a man in prison fight for his freedom".

On September 25, 2002, John Walsh (America's Most Wanted) aired a show called "When False Accusations Put You Behind Bars". This was aired on his new talk show called The John Walsh Show. William Mayo appeared on that show via satellite from a prison in Georgia. I listened to John Walsh as he raised questions about William's trial. There is strong evidence that the system didn't work and William received a bum deal Mr. Walsh stated. Mr. Walsh also couldn't understand Mr. Mayo's outrages sentence of two life sentences plus forty years for armed robbery even when there was no deaths or injuries in the crime and William Mayo had a clean criminal background.

This is how I became interested and concerned about a man I didn't even know. The two co-defendants have admitted guilt and took a plea bargain with the Prosecutor for a much lesser sentence of 20 years. Since the trial they have both come forward to testify twice in court that they lied about Mr. Mayo's involvement and have stated: "William Mayo had nothing to do with their crime", I believe without a doubt, HE IS INNOCENT!

Please take the time to visit a web-site created on behalf of William Jonathan Mayo by his supporters and please sign his petition because he should not have to suffer another day for something he did not do.

Our Criminal Justice System was created to protect us, but who protects us from our Criminal Justice System?

10. Save Robbery Homicide Division

Robbery Homicide Division is the freshest new show on television this season. It is also one of the few shows that CBS is canning. The groundbreaking drama has the terrific writing, acting, and directing that will bring viewers to the network -- if given a chance.

Tell CBS that focus groups and Nielsens don't tell the whole story. Robbery Homicide Division is a show that deserves a chance.

11. 24 to life in prison for armed robbery is wrong!!!

I have a very dear friend who is now incarcerated for the charges of armed robbery. Due to the law they passed in 1/1/98 anyone who has a weapon in the event of a robbery gets 20 years to life in prison! No questions asked. I am trying to get together a petition for my friend hoping the courts will give him one chance. He is a very good man and many people were shocked when they heard he did this but there was a lot going on in his life, his mom had passed away and his dad kicked him out of his house leaving him on the streets with no where to go and no one to call.

I know if they give this man a chance he can make the changes he needs to live in society as a law abiding person and he deserves that right at only being 19 years old!! This was the only charge he has had as an adult and I am asking you to sign this petition to show I am not the only person who feels against this, and maybe they will give him a second chance.
